Hi all,
I have just got my new DS918+ up and running and thought I’d provide some feedback of my initial impressions.
Spec wise, it’s got four 4tb WD Red NAS drives, with 8 gb ram (match pair). Synology Hybrid Raid configuration, 10.7tb available. I followed the Plex guidance for the install to the letter for this NAS. I have a Plex Pass and have enabled harware transcoding.
I have spent the weekend copying all my media to it - over 3tb of data. This now totals:
260 movies.
60+ TV series (over 1,500 episodes).
Almost 20,000 music tracks
Various personal files
The video is a mixture of H264 and H265 HEVC 10 bit stuff, almost all 1080p resolution. The music is mostly hi quality mp3’s, but there is also a growing library of FLAC format albums.
First of all, the copy speed averaged around 130+ mbps so the transfer process wasn’t too onerous.
Disk Station Manager. I’ve never used a NAS before but I’ve found it very easy to use so far.
Plex. This was the main reason for purchase and so far it has exceeded my expectations.
Playing to my Samsung 55" Smart TV, connected via an internal network running through my mains ring main. Everything plays perfectly with a very quick start up time. I’ve even tried a couple of 4K HEVC movies, bitrates of about 25mbps. They play fine.
On my iPhone X, both indoors on wireless and outdoors on 3/4G. Once again, everything streams perfectly.
I have also put Plex on my Dad’s LG OLED C8 - he lives 130 miles away. After an initial couple of seconds buffering, everything plays perfectly on his TV (also running an internal network through the ring main).
I must admit I did expect some glitches to sort out but the only glitch so far has been with my Windows 10 PC, trying to map a network share to the DS918+. It works, then drops the share when I log off of windows. I’ll get to the bottom of this when I get a minute later this week.
Well, that’s it for now. Happy to answer any questions people may have.
Paul
