Synology NAS Server DS418play Sufficient For Movie Server

Hello,
I am just about to set up a Plex movie server. I was wondering if the Synology NAS Server DS418play is sufficient for this purpose. I am not going to install any 4K movies. If there are other recommendations in the same price range, I am open to these recommendations.

Thank you
Jr

That NAS is not huge powerful if you are sharing with a bunch of folks that will need transcoding. If just for you then probably fine ( since you are not using 4k)

the compatibility guide here you may find useful https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/plex-media-server/nas-devices/

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. May I ask what you are using with your Plex. This may help guide me. I looked at the chart, many NAS.

Thank you

I use a Mac Mini for my Plex Media Server.

I have one of these. It’s great but as the other person notes, if you plan on sharing with many people, performance is not as good. I can have about 3 people streaming at once on it.

Can I be of any help with NAS selection?

Hello,
Thank you very much for all of the reply’s. I am trying not to get too crazy on pricing. Usually at most two may be streaming at once. I guess the other reason for the Synology NAS Server DS418play, was it’s Raid capability? I would like to be able to swap a drive if it goes bad since I will have many movies on it. I do see others just using computers such as the mini Mac, but how do you protect the loss of data. I do not mind spending more than the Synology NAS Server DS418play if there can be a noticeable performance.

Thank you all again for the help,
JR
