Synology update disabled Plex remote access?

QNAP QTS 4.3.3.0229 has some issues. I have reverted to 4.3.3.0210 (appropriate for the 1282) and PMS normal operation returns.

As far as PMS is concerned, I maintain latest Plex Pass or something else I may be testing at Engineering’s request.

Everyone has their own servers setup in different ways. Some dive deeper into the security and firewalls and network settings and everything else. I would think it would be common why one person has issues and another doesn’t, even given the exact same equipment. I’m still one of those people who still wants to identify the exact issue. If I ever find it, I’ll report it.

Well, I wasn’t going from DSM 5 to 6. I went from 6.1.1 to 6.1.2 so that still wouldn’t tell me the cause of the issue unless they tweaked the firewall in version 6.1.2 and I don’t see that anywhere in the release notes. While I don’t really know the root cause, manually opening up the ports fixed the issue. If I needed to do that anyway for DSM 6, then not sure why it was working before the latest release.

Either way, its all good now.

Since your last post, I’ve chatted with the Dev about firewall definition rules.

With version 5, we included predefined firewall rules for you to use. With all the changes in version 6 (not to mention the effort to just make PMS run again), we decided to back off for a bit.

Synology likes to keep the box ‘tight’ and that’s fine. Changing the rules without letting us or anyone know is a ‘concern’. Most times, especially with DSM 6.1, we found out what was actually in it and done to it when you did. If look back, there was quite a thread to deal with it. (build 15047)

I’ll be doing the firewall work and getting that in an update so it can start making its way out to you.

I can’t fix this for the life of me. I just spend 4 hours trying everything on the internet with no fixes that worked… :frowning:

Update: I went into Synology’s Control Panel > Security > Firewall and edited my firewall rules. Previously I had no custom entries of any kind. I added port 32400 to allow all connections. Plex now works with full direct access from outside my network.

This tells me that there is something about the DSM update that did something to block access. In looking through Synology’s release notes, I still don’t see what part of the update could have been the culprit.

Perfect!!! Man was beating my head on this for a while. Was working working did a update on synology (month ago) and didn’t use it then tried using it and fail. Fail fail fail after additional OS and Software updates. But sure enough it looks like they took Plex out of the application list that it sees for the firewall.

Thanks, thanks, thanks! I got a little nuts here with all these ports. Your tip did the trick. Thanks again.
