In times like this where our music library is linked to musicbrainz where it supports multiple artists being tagged onto a track it shouldn’t be impossible to implement this where albums/tracks get shown on all included artist pages
I have to disagree on this. The only tag IMO would be helpful and safe for Plex to write to would be while listening to a track in Plexamp I could star rate it.
Heck yes, that’s the whole point! Enthusiasts want to use local metadata for a reason, and the majority understand the requirements to do it properly. They are well past knowing exactly how best to organize and name folders and files. There’s an entire market of 3rd party products such as Tag&Rename, MP3Tag, MediaMonkey, etc to provide power user tools to quickly and easily modify media file tags.
Absolutely, this is a no brainer!
Well “most users” that do not want to maintain their metadata or don’t know how. Once again, I’ll refer to my previous comment that there is a entire market of product tools to maintain metadata.
In preparation for a BBQ this past weekend I had spent last week editing the music Genre, track rating and the mood name in thousands of tracks using Tag&Rename. When I open the file properties in Windows File Explorer or MusicBrainz Picard all my changes are reflected. I’ve performed the “Refresh All Metadata” multiple times, but still tags in Plex are not reflecting what’s stored in the file.
All of my media uses Local data which allows me a huge layer of protection and convenience eliminating any possibility of Plex scraping something incorrectly or their DB becoming corrupt. This also makes my music portable across other programs. Almost all of my music has been scraped using MusicBrainz Picard, which does not fill in the mood or style.
I have the Music Library setup as follows:
* Scanner: Plex Music Scanner
* Agent: Personal Media Artists
* Prefer local metadata
* Genres: Embedded Tags
* Album Art: Both Plex Music and Local Files
* Settings->Agents->Albums (order):
* Personal Media Albums
* Local Media Assets (Albums)
Notice all the references in the above listed settings and the following articles to “local”, “personal” and “embedded”, but yet they are ignored. There is zero mention in those articles regarding any metadata being ignored!!
Based on this article, AllMusic might be where the mood tags are coming from:
However, these statements from the same article make it clear that Plex should be reading all of my local metadata stored in the file rather than AllMusic:
“If you choose to enable the Prefer local metadata (advanced) library preference, that basically means that you’re prioritizing local embedded tags over online information as well as committing to having accurate tags for your entire music library. You should really only enable this preference if you absolutely know that you need to do so.”
Prefer local metadata:
“This one was mentioned earlier. Broadly speaking, it means that Plex will expect that you have embedded metadata tags for Track, Album, and Artist (and potentially Album Artist) for each track. These will be used instead of what we would normally provide with regular matching for the content. Importantly, if this option is enabled, then it basically means that you’re promising that not only is your entire music library tagged, but also that it’s tagged correctly.”
Metadata Agents:
From the above Metadata Agents article: "Metadata embedded in most music file formats will be read and used if Local Media Assets is enabled."
Anyone that uses MB Picard understands we can’t rely on MB to make it’s best guess to be accurate for every album and every tag. Many time I have to use Google, Discogs, etc. to help find the correct album in MB and then use it’s tagger feature to apply to the album. Therefore, it is pure silliness to count on Plex to get it all right even half the time!
Considering the various third-party programs that allow people to generate their own metadata in the first place, indicates there are many people like myself.
Plex is supposed to be all about freedom and flexibility, and playlists are away for the end-user to take advantage and manipulate their media to their own linking. We all have different music tastes, therefore it’s reasonable that two people would want different music played for a Summery or Party mood for instance. Maybe my idea for moods like Summery or Party, are a laid back get together with friend playing backyard games. According to Plex my library has no results for Summery even though I have Beach Boys, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffet and many others. For others, it’s wild and crazy upbeat party. Even MB Picard isn’t perfect with genres, for instance I change a lot of Rock genre to Classic Rock. When I edit a track in Plex there is no option for the track genre tag, you can only control for the album, which seems to combine genre of all tracks should it very from one track to another.
Also consider that MB doesn’t assign the star rating, however my ratings show up in Picard. If I change the genre, then Picard reads my genre instead. These ID3 tags are clearly user curated metadata and reasonable to assume it would be considered local metadata and treated that way. So even though MB is about perfection, Picard still allows users to manipulate their local metadata and read it properly. This is true for every application other than Plex it seems.
Sadly, I’m going to have to take a step back and reconsider continuing to use Plex for music. Time to look at other music streaming servers.
Implementing a COMPOSER tag that PMS can sort on is vital for us classical music lovers. All of the rest of the request is nice to have, but not vital.
What I mainly want Plex to implement is Multiple Artists. I’m sticking tired of seeing Plex duplicating albums and have multiple artists being combined in one artist and then Plex not knowing who they are and then having to manually fix it by having to choose one of the those artists. If Emby can do it I’m sure Plex can. Like there are so many songs that have multiple artists and I don’t want to choose anymore
Again, no news. Completely ignored by Plex devs.
I would be willing to pay for another Lifetime Plex Pass just to get significantly improved ID3 tag support and database query capability for smart play lists.
Can someone confirm recent fixes to metadata? I haven’t seen any more missing tags, but some tracks get the wrong artist
Found some clues in the release notes:
- (Music) Modernized the metadata matching and refresh logic (#13539)
- (Music) Artists would not save sort title from embedded tags (#13604)
Also reading the releasetype tag from the files.
I use Roon for a several years now.
Bought a Plex lifetime license recently for listening music when out of my house with PlexAmp.
As Plex states:
A beautiful Plex music player for audiophiles, curators, and hipsters.
Ahum?
..audiophiles, curators…?
Without tagging per track I cannot say it is for curators. Please add tag support in Plex as PlexAmp as well.
That’s a really good point. I haven’t seen that statement in a long time, and forgot about it. Thanks for pointing it out.
You’re talking about genres, right? I think that’s the only thing Plex moves up to artist/album level.
Well, not only genres (I have tagged the tracks in a genre I prefer).
I also “tag” a track in for example Moods and Occasions, that way I can easily gather some tracks for an occasion when I don’t have time to create a playlist.
Here are some examples.
Amen!
Another request for deeper tagging. Specifically discsubtitle support
8 years later bump
Since I just saw the notification on this dead thread, I ripped CDs to .flac using some Mac program at the time. As a music streaming subscriber now, it’s minimally relevant only if I’m searching for a specific version of album or song that the streaming service doesn’t have.
Genre tag at the track level, is mandatory when you select music for dancing,
Still loving you from Scorpion is not hard metal music… But this is the genre of the album.
Plex Amp is very powerfull but i can’t use it to select dancing music.
Please bring us the genre tag at the track level.
Ability to read text in the field (which Apple’s Music.app shows as “Comments”) and be able to match for smart playlists to me is key. I use this field to tag tracks for all sorts of smart playlists in Music.app. Genres at the track level is also important. I really want to get out of Music.app and Plex is the ideal destination, given how much I use it for TV/Music/Videos, but Plex is way too simplistic with how it handles music.
