There doesn't need to be a major stutter though, since as jackandjohn said, a small difference in playback time is acceptable. So if one of the clients is for some reason out of sync by more than 5-10 seconds, the clients who are ahead pause for that long to get everyone in sync again.
I also think it would be really nice if the user who has to pause gets a small unobtrusive message in the corner of their screen saying something like "Waiting for dublinus to catch up", so they know why the pause is happening and that it isn't just a network issue. This works really well in Starcraft, where when a game is slower than it should be, all players get a similar message at the top of their screens.
This would be a fantastic feature to have. Here's to hoping is comes sooner rather than later.
Though it would need to come with some improved audio and channel-streaming support to really exploit the potential as a replacement for things like sonos.
This would be great, but is there an option for just audio? I have an HTPC setup running XBMC that I am trying to replace with my Fire TV that runs Plex. My Plex server runs on a Drobo5N. One of the features I have been using quite frequently with content playing on XBMC (HTPC running on Ubuntu) is the ability to duplicate the audio on the TV to the speaker on my phone (or headphones/Bluetooth speaker paired to my phone) using the SoundWire app. This is especially handy in my apartment because it allows me to still hear the audio while I am on my patio watching through the sliding glass door, or cooking in the kitchen.
I've been experimenting implementing a whole house audio using RaspberryPie's with RasPlex. I have one RaspberryPie for each zone and these are controlled with tablets or Plex/Web. I have a centralised AV-cabinet hosting the RaspBerryPies for the in-ceiling/in-wall speaker zones and few located in separate listening locations.
Though Rasplex is still (imho) not fast enough as full blown Plex client because of the sluggish UI, it works marvelously when remotely controlled. The ability to sync playback of several zones is one of the last things missing from a very inexpensive whole house audio solution. The other one missing is the ability to control volume of the target client(s).
Ive been hoping for this forever, even bought my lifetime membership anticipating both this and a better Android app (modeled like the iphone app would be just fine).
I have a couple headless RasPlex’s that i have in different ‘zones’, so this is my diy version of Sonos for Much less money, but the tandem play will round out that loop.
Build this and you can advertise it as a zone controller! Every other option for that is Super expensive…
Yes! This is one of the last major feature requests I would love to see added. Everything else I have wanted has been implemented already. Hope to see it soon!
Agreed, I would love to see this as well! It would be a huge addition to the media side of my home automation and the only thing left I would need is an Indigo plugin for Plex.
I used this last night. Rarlix does not do this. It does the same thing Plex Web does. It sees that something is being played somewhere and when you hit "sync" it starts playing from whatever point the the movie/show is when you click, but it makes no actual effort to sync. The amount of time it takes to actually start playing creates a delay. This request is for actual syncing with a stream so multiple TVs within earshot can all play the same movie together without an echo.
