I just want to say thanks to whoever is involved with this magnificent piece of software and that it just works and always looks good. (5+ years and counting, various moves between Linux and Windows). I managed to break it twice by not treating my server well but restore from backup was painless, just takes longer every time (Do I really need to upgrade my home to TenGigabitEthernet?)
I mean… after 5 years I just bought lifetime because… I really don’t miss anything (besides a bigger NAS… as mine can’t handle my plex drive anymore, a common issue, I hear) ;)… and with things like plexamp (in the car! yay!) and ‘skip intro’ , TVs supporting the player natively and the various plugins that make tagging and sorting a breeze this seriously enters “I don’t need anything else ever again” territory.
Keep it up! Can’t wait for the next level.
much love
Andreas
(creating a new topic as all the other thank you posts are closed… which is a pity)
I came here looking for a place to put a thank you / appreciation as well - so I hope you do not mind me adding to your thread
I grew up as a kid in the era where families had a big personal “movie collection” in the form of a drawer or cabinet full of VHS and DVDs. There were some issues with that for sure lol - but it was always neat kind of having a family library of your favorites.
Things have changed. Nowadays, I’m signed up for like 7 different streaming services all trying to push various content to me. Sure - my favorite movies are there - somewhere - but usually buried and I have to Google to find out what service they are on. For all the amazing content we have received - it sometimes feels a bit impersonal and fractured. I can never find my old favorites, and new favorites are pushed to the back of the queue as soon as I finish them. Money is not the issue (always pay for content) - but the organization is.
Enter Plex! Plex, to me, has revived that “drawer full of VHS” feel that I really enjoyed. I can put all my favorites in here, and Plex pretties it up and makes it accessible to me just about anywhere. It’s the VHS cabinet for the digital age!
From one developer to another - the application is really good. I will be honest, some design decisions I do not agree with and am actively petitioning to change - but on the whole this is a well designed piece of software. The gripes we have that seem so big are just magnified because of the lofty expectations that plex’s excellence has given us; in the big scheme of things - we are complaining about the cup holder size in our Porsche.
The metadata automation is excellent. Collections blew me away - I didn’t even know this was a plex feature until I was struggling what to do with several related movies cluttering up my views. Platform support across all the clients I use is great. It is resilient and able to be backed up. Pricing is fair. UI is great. I primarily use it for movies and shows - but now Plex Music is replacing YouTube Music for me as well (for remote access of my personal library). It’s a great media center on a number of fronts. And 2FA?!?! NICE. That was big. 2FA is a pain in the butt to implement - I’ve been involved with those projects elsewhere.
So - great job folks. Thank you for allowing me to add back the personalized movie library I grew up with for myself and my own family. Pretty soon my Plex server will have 3 generations of my family using it . The VHS drawer lives!
