The current PMP client king?

Hi,

I currently have my PMS on an unraid server and use a rasplex and 2009 Mac Mini as clients.

I’m getting a 4k TV so want to start to be able to direct play 4k media. Reading articles and forum posts it seems like one of the newer Roku devices or a Shield is my best option (custom build HTPC likely being more expensive).

Each client seems good but has the odd niggle. I was just reading how the Shield updates in the play store aren’t the fastest.

Is there a definitive winner out of the two options at the moment?

The Shield. It lacks proper dynamic range switching between SDR and HDR content. You will have to do that manually if you want to switch back and forth between SDR and HDR.

I moved this thread because you are asking about Roku vs Shield. PMP is Plex Media Player which is a full fledged player installed on HTPCs.

The Shield is a beast. Only set top box that supports HD audio formats. I have had no issues with updates, honestly I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Ok, thanks both.
Shield it is.
There is a thread on Plex Pass versions of the sheild app being slow to be available (as it’s a manual process for the Plex team).

If you mean the server part, yes it’s a bit crippled compared to other platforms. Still works, though.

As a client, it’s magnificient.
