The Future of PLEX Streaming Content

I, for one, am a big advocate for the evolution of PLEX into the realm of providing streaming content. I feel the advent of the free-to-stream content in PLEX will provide the foundation for growth in the months and years to come. I trust that garners the PLEX team a new stream of revenue and allows them to integrate licensed content as part of the service.

With that, I hope we’re a step closer to the day that we can rent and purchase movies via the Plex platform. I know, I know… why do we we need yet another streaming content shopping platform? Well, it stands to reason that, if Plex can license content for rental and sale, they may also be sure backed to share in the MoviesAnywhere ecosystem with the other providers.

For me, this would complete the PLEX package. It would be great to, finally, have all of our digital media (either hosted or in the cloud) curated in one place. This also seems like the next logical step to becoming our digital hub.

Most folks buy their content digitally these days. I’m still an “old fogie” and redeem codes from my disc purchases (lossless audio still does it for me). Either way, I’ve garnered quite the collection of licensed media.

I’m sure I’m not alone in this desire, but I’m surprised I hadn’t seen this as a roadmap or suggested feature already.

Thanks to the team at PLEX for continuing to improve and evolve the product. Although there are many who complain (that’s what forums are designed for, right?), please know you have a loyal following for a reason. Your efforts are noted and appreciated!

I just saw the announcement that Crackle is joining the lineup of free streaming content options on Plex. I’m still hoping that we’ll be able to purchase and rent films as part of the ecosystem as well.
