The need for a Trade\Buy\Sell category?

I think all here on the forum are Plex fans and want to promote its use. It is with that in mind that there be a place where we could accomplish getting more people involved by introducing such as a Trade\Buy\Sell category or if anyone knows of a site like this already exists would point me to it i.e. like Reddit?. I’m just trying to open a discussion about this issue.

Moving to General since this is not at all related to Rasplex.

To trade/buy/sell what?

I would assume that it is meant to be for hardware.

I am actually quite unsure it would be a good idea to have such a forum section as I can foresee a LOT of problems and complaints between people and that would pull Plex into the middle of those disagreements.

It would not be bad to have a forum like a “deals” forum where people can post about deals they have found as that would benefit many of us as many people here are always on the lookout for bargains and nobody can watch every possible source. But, I believe, that sales between individuals should not even be discussed on a Plex forum for “deals.” Links to EBay, and the such, are marginal for me but that is an area that deserves more discussion.

A “Deals” section would be cool. I do not want Plex in the middle and it would be understood that any deals would be between the two private parties and have no relations to the Plex company itself. This would greatly benefit people who have products related to Plex hardware or even customized Plex images etc. I deal a lot with Plex Pi pre-configured images that would be great for inexperienced users just as an example. It’s just another way to grow the Plex user base.

Packaging a version of PMS with a Pi and then selling it on Ebay probably goes against the TOS.
But I’m no lawyer so I would read the relevant sections of the TOS and check with Plex Inc on that

Selling hardware isn’t against TOS. Plex isn’t even installed on the image. The users have the ability to install Plex and\or Kodi.

That is the exact kind of thing that I do NOT want to see. A “deals” section like you envision would encourage that and it would also mean people trying to post about charging for access to their server all of which are against Plex’s TOS.

If it is confined to links/information about legitimate commercial businesses like Amazon, Tiger Direct, NewEgg, MonoPrice or the like (Including manufacture’s websites) then it would be a good service but individual users selling directly to other users should be done on EBay or Craiglist or the such without Plex even allowing the links or anything mentioning it on this site.

As an example of what I think would be good is if I stumble upon a bargain for large hard disks I could post it and there could be a lot of people that might be interested. For a lot of us local storage is important and we are always looking for good values to expand our storage but nobody can watch everywhere there might be a great deal. So we could watch that forum and maybe pickup some real savings.

But pre-configured hardware or software with Plex included is not a good idea at all and almost surely against Plex’s TOS.

I think the confusion comes from the I deal a lot with Plex Pi pre-configured images. If Plex is not included what makes it a Plex Pi pre-configured image?

Maybe you’re right. For clarification.

As I posted before “Selling hardware isn’t against TOS. Plex isn’t even installed on the image. The users have the ability to install Plex and\or Kodi.”

I’m not selling Plex. I am selling a hardware bundle with a pre-configured Pi image to work with the hardware. The users decide what media server they want to install. The image itself has been heavily modified in many ways.

What I’m selling or not selling is not the reason for the post to begin with, I was just using that as an example.

The Plex Team has already set the ground for this, though. When NetGear released the newest model of router with Plex Media Server (even the lobotomized version it is) already pre-loaded.

So why shouldn’t some enterprising soul not be able to sell a pre-installed NUC, NAS, etc. if that’s what they want to try making a buck on? (Oh, I FORGOT! They already have this with the “new” Plex Professional Installer" thing they just came out with!)

Can’t have it both ways, @Elijah_Baley. If they want to enforce the ToS on us, then we should push back to ensure they don’t violate their own rules.

Both Netgear and the PlexPass Pro have permission from Plex so it’s not a violation. If you don’t have permission, then it is a violation.

A buy/sell/trade forum is something we have discussed in the past, but decided not to pursue. There are better existing sites and forums for that kind of thing and we don’t see the need to get into that already well-served area.

Creating commercial partnerships with unique licensing agreements that are separate and distinct from end-user non-commercial licensing is not violating our own rules.

The Plex Term of Service outlines the granting of Plex software and services for personal, non-commercial, and non-sublicensable use. See the TOS for the full licensing conditions. The Plex Pro Installer program was created to provide home theater and home automation dealers and installers an authorized method for adding Plex installation and configuration to their services. They can also purchase Plex Pass subscriptions on behalf of their customers. Plex also partners with hardware manufacturers, including NVIDIA, Western Digital, Netgear, and others – who have been granted similar rights of re-sale and distribution for commercial use.

If you have any further questions or concerns regarding Plex’s TOS, you may contact legal on our contact page.

Given the post is gone now, I am happy to PM your link to anyone that asks if you try and pull a “no i didn’t” if @hthighway doesn’t confirm that is exact what we removed from your post.

here is the text from your ad should you not believe I have this info.

"Raspberry Pi 3 with customized Pi OS integrated with Plex media server. Automatically sets up WIFI hot spot. Connect to the Pi via web browser using any device that has WIFI such as desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet, TV and watch or listen to all your media. Download the Plex app for an even better experience. Just plug-in your Pi then plug-in your USB drive or stick. Next setup Plex libraries and your are set! Can be plugged into a router for access to the internet and\or your home network. Because of the Pi’s limited power, all videos should be in H.264 video and AAC audio, it will not play AVIs unless converted. Pi’s can be powered with AC\DC making it portable\mobile it’s AWESOME! Take it anywhere… road trips, camping and\or use it as your home router! "

I wouldn’t mind a buy/sell forum. I think there’s value in the reputation people have built up in the Plex community with each other which would give people a bit more piece of mind. I myself will probably be selling my six 3TB WD Red drives sometime in the next few months.

Yeah, the only thing I have really wanted to try to rehome is a couple of HD HR Prime units I have that are not being used. I figured with the new DVR setup, someone might be able to use them. I agree there are lots of places this type of thing can occur at, but sometimes it just feels “better” to stay in the Plex playground if you will. Let us know if anything changes.
