The server was not powerful enough to convert video

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929
Player Version#: Latest ROKU
Windows 11 Pro
128GB Installed Memory
4GB GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX 24-Core Processor
ASRock X399 Professional Gaming
P3.80.3.1 BIOS

Network:
Ubiquity Edge Router 4 with 2 hard wired AP’s averaging 300Mb/S on a strong signal.

Given the above stats for my Server I would think I should be able to transcode what I need to transcode. I only had a single stream going on my local network.
I have the Roku player set to original quality and the server set to hurt my CPU.
The Dashboard shows it transcoding the 4K to 1080p.
I have a 4K Roku and a 4K HDR TV.
Can anyone offer advice to alleviate the issue?

-Ron

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-08-08_17-26-53.zip (4.7 MB)

Your server’s CPU has a passmark score of approx. 29000 – that’s pretty good. However you need to keep in mind that that performance is spread over 24 cores (leaving you with a single-core performance of approx. 1200). When it comes to transcoding, there’s certain tasks that cannot spread across as many cores as you might want – which could be part of what’s giving you trouble.

(slightly different numbers from a different source which says the CPU has a PassMark score of approx. 30500 and a single thread rating of 2360 – still giving us the same order of magnitude)

While video transcoding puts a heavy load on a CPU, it’s worth to note that decoding/re-encoding EAC3 or similar modern audio codecs will take its toll too (requiring way more power than transcoding your regular/classic audio codecs).

It might make a difference that some of your PMS seems to be able to use the GPU to transcode some of your videos but cannot use it for others (that’ll depend on specifics about the source codecs / media properties; keep in mind that GPUs cannot handle burning subtitles into a video stream).

Is there any particular file where you had those issues?
From what I can see, it appears you had trouble with some GoT episodes but not with other streams?

Hi and Thank you for the reply!

The main issues I’m having now is with a 4K version of “Only Murders in the building”
Is there any setting I could use or hardware I can upgrade to make this issue go away? If I convert the video to something else, would that improve it?
Why does it down scale the video from 4K to 1080p when all my equipment is 4K?

Sorry for the long reply.

Running Plex as a Service in Windows doesn’t allow the Hardware transcoding to work.

Logs are reporting that Direct Play is disabled.

The file you are trying to play would need like an Nvidia Shield plugged into a surround sound systems plugged into the TV to meet all the defaults of direct play. Convert the file to something that the Roku can natively play.

Thanks, I’ll convert it.
One more question, please…
How should I run PLEX on a windows 11 Pro PC to make it better?

Keep an eye out for the 64 bit version of the Server to become publicly available, that will be able to utilize more of the RAM that you have.
