So I am not even really sure where to start as I have just set up the server literally a week ago. The playback was fine but as I moved further away the playback became less smooth and more jumpy and laggy.
It still plays just at parts where the video moves a little fast it either jumps to the next scene or pauses and then jumps to the next.
Certain it isn’t internet I have 500mps and the server at home has 200mps. So I assume that is enough.
For OS both are running windows 10 pro. It also happens on the phone which is a android. So it happens on all videos at every setting no matter how low.
I downloaded the latest server version last week so unless that upgraded recently it is most up to date. Same with client desktop plex is all updates.
Are those download speeds? What is the upload speed from your home? Lots of internet providers do not offer the same upload and download speeds. Not sure where your home is, but a popular provider called Spectrum here in the US has a 200/10 package, so even though downloads are good, uploads are very limited.
If it turns out to not be an internet speed issue, then it could be internet latency. This depends on the distance between the connections. How far away are your physically from your home? If you’re in another country or continent, this can be significant.
Lastly, it could be that the video you are playing is not compatible with the client you are using so your server is transcoding the video, which is very cpu intensive. Turning on hardware transcoding may help if your system supports it. If not, then your cpu may not be powerful enough to perform this transcoding.
Your upload speed with Cox won’t really matter in this case, but that 10 Mbps limit from your house will be an issue. You’ll need to set the remote quality in the client apps to les than 10 Mbps. This will however force your server to transcode for any files that have a bitrate higher than that setting.
You can upload the log here or PM them to me if you don’t want to share publicly.
Got the logs. It shows that you have your quality setting in the client as 10 Mbps. PMS is then converting the stream to about 9.5 Mbps. It’s using hardware transcoding and I’m seeing it work more than fast enough.
My guess is that this using the 10 Mbps setting is just too high for your upload speed from your house. Typically you don’t want to use more than about 80% of your limit to account for overhead and glitches.
If you are seeing buffering even at a lower setting, I’ll need to see the log for that attempt. If it’s already in your log, please let me know about what time so I’m not just randomly looking for something.
