I don’t completely disagree with you here, especially regarding some of the later comments on this thread, but I think (ignoring the more ‘passionate’ responses) it has been invaluable and has brought to light some things that need changing in Plex over and above better communication.
I am personally anxiously awaiting an announcement from Plex with the included security changes requested here to be officially rolled into a server update.
Let’s all focus on the good that can come from this and improve the product we all enjoy!
So, I noticed maybe a week or so ago that all the users on my server had their names changed, including mine.
I had no idea what was going on, so I just set my “Full Name” to something the other users would recognize when they saw it.
I only received the email about my username being set today.
However, as the admin, now I have no idea who any of these accounts belong to.
They were changed, with barely any reference to the original username.
As the admin, I’ve had to help other users log into my server, by creating accounts for them and such.
If they have a problem now, I have no idea which user account is the affected one, or how I’d figure that out, assuming the other person doesn’t even know their username. Usually they can’t even remember which email address they used.
When using emails, at least I can go back to the person and tell them what their login was, or at a minimum which email account they used so they can look up that information.
Now I can’t. All that will happen now is I’ll be forced to delete that user (or not, since I’ll have no way to know which user it is), and have the person create a new account, thereby losing all their history.
EDIT: For some history, the only people on my server are family, but some of them can’t even remember their email password, so they create a new email account instead. So there’s no doubt they wouldn’t see this email, and then go to use plex and can’t find their profile since it’s named differently.
Thanks, I missed that before, however…
You want us to install a third party application?
That may be a workaround, but not a solution.
It would be nice if I could see their email address with their user id in the Manage users screen.
As someone else said, I invited them, so I already know their email address.
At the very least, an admin-only viewable custom field we can use for making notes. Allowing us to put anything we want there. Similar to what Discord has for users.
You don’t have to keep the app installed if you don’t want to. Just export the info to a spreadsheet and you can then remove the app. Just an option to get past this, if you want it.
How do I get myplexpass to rework using my new username account? Currently if I login using the shiny new username it simply shows me as a basic user with no setttings configured at all, no media added etc. Appears it does not want to let me re-enter my previous username I have been successfully using for years. How do I get it to recognise me as a plexpass holder?
Could it be that you had created that separate account on purpose or accidentally at some point in the past? Plex setting a username on your account doesn’t impact your Plex Pass status.
Maybe you can check the exact e-mail address used in the notification e-mail vs. the one linked to your Plex Pass account.
I dont understand?. My email address is the same as my existing username for plex. which is the same email address I got the message you are changing it from., If you had sent an email message to a different account then how would I get it?.
I’ve used my plexpass account for years now, with my existing email address as my username. Now I cannot access it. Plex seems to have provided me a new basic account only. How can this be fixed? I can asure you as far as I am aware there have been no changes my end, in fact it has been quite awhile since I have updated plex and logged in (as everytime I did it prompted me to install yet another update so I got tired of it and hadnt used it for some time now, especially since my computer also needed constant updates from Apple. I decided to wait until I had installed apples updates to Monterey, and then update my Plex software. But first this problem…
The account you are currently using was created 1 year ago and has never had a server, nor a Plex Pass assigned to it.
It is an account which has been created by “Signing in with Apple”.
It is this account which had an username created for it.
Very likely your other (Plex Pass) account is using “Username/Email” for signing in and already has a username.
I’d log out, then clear cookies, then log in using the email address + password.
Who is Plex to choose a name for me? And of course the all the names I tried to choose were taken, including fuplex This was definitely not appreciated.
Oh great. see that this posting is under the stoopid name that Plex gave me.
Thank you for your reply.
I had not remembered I created that I last year. I think I tried to because plex even then had trouble letting me login and with all the updated versions things got messy for me.
I have found that I can access my correct plexpass account by ignoring the new login details and simply login using my existing username and email.
Should I now (somehow) change my username and password to that which plex supplied me via email?
Thanks for your time and any advice.
No. It just means you did indeed create 2 accounts. From what Otto found out, only that 2nd account didn’t have a username associated and was therefore assigned one in the current process. The account with your Plex pass wasn’t touched.
If you created the 2nd one by accident you don’t need to keep it.
plex team - this is sh*t show frankly - I cant tell which user is which now. mainly cos no one has responded to yr instructions to users and changed their user names to anything useful on my friends list - so I have to instruct them right? rubbish really rubbish… very disappointing - we need admin side control many ‘friends’ are not savvy enough to understand how this all works… sigh more unnecessary ball ache
My situation is that I host a Plex server, and my username was NOT changed because, as I understand from this thread, it was not an email address. So I didn’t receive any communication about user names changing. OK, fine. But then I suddenly see that a bunch of my users have had their usernames changed, so of course I think something has gone wrong and that perhaps my server has been hacked. Fortunately my users are all family, so it’s not a huge deal, but I did panic for a while until I finally found this thread.
Whatever the merits of the change, the communication has been just terrible. And if I missed the announcement in one of the irritating self-congratulatory emails that Plex sends out (where everything is just perfect and progressing wonderfully in Plex World), I make no apology. Something that has such a wide impact should surely merit a more considered communication plan.
I’m rapidly learning that blaming Plex whenever something goes wrong with my server is, while uncharitable, actually the correct first step in resolving any issue.
no it doesn’t help ‘the user name is made up of the begging of the email plus radon ch’ - all my users are friends and fam - but can cant tell where theres two people called mark - both marks emails start with ma… for example which one is which! ??? - badly thought out & poorly implemented & rubbish excuses IMHO - ive got 2 x users miXXXX & miXXXX - no idea whos who - then theres maXXXX & marXXXX - guess? sigh facepalm etc etc gonna have revoke and resign people I guess shambles
This. Very much this. I had left it intentionally blank. I do NOT want Plex to be enforcing some name so I can be found in whatever manner. What I do on my server is my own business and my family’s and friends’, not yours.
This makes me seriously rethink about my subscription…
