I totaly agree - this unique username is plain bullshit- I did not want this, the email is unique enough. I really just want to see the internal users and now need to change this together with my kids and my wife who have no clue how to do this. To afterwards point out, when searching in the forum that the displayed name can be changed back to something meaningful is not the kind of customer focus I expect. REALLY BAD MOVE!
As this topic is a mix of opinion, useful information and venting, is there anywhere a topic that covers the practical things you can do for this change. i.e. best practice for a) multiple Plex servers; b) multiple users sharing; c) single server with multiple local users on various client devices d)…? If not, might be good for Plex to add a section somewhere, if so, where?
…and specifically as I’ve either missed it or it’s not in this rather long topic:
In my setup (single svr./mutiple local users/various clients [and no streming indexing/searching required]) is there any way I can change my username to my name to match the local managed users, which is about the only place I ever see it or use it. i.e. I want the screen to read:
Big Block with R | Big Block with J | Big Block with B …
Rick Jackie Brock ...
rather than (second bit only)
ra926 Jackie Brock …
…because of course Rick had gone probably long before I became a lifetime member but I’d like my username to be as friendly as my families monikers.
(Sorry I have no idea what I’ve done to produce the horizontal scrolling bar - that’s meant to be text aligned under the sections above.)
Thanks.
It sort of works but still insists on showing the username underneath, which no-one else needs to know in my scenario - it would make more sense to show “primary logon”/“Plex account” or some such to be in line with “managed user”. Better still just junk the second line in the interface.
Full Name as a field name/account item is counter intuitive to me (I’m British) as here Full Name is normally something like:
Jeffery Ronald Archibald Mulligan
i.e. everything in your name, not something short for on screen name/ nickname or whatever.
Just another reason to find a new Plex alternative after paying for it monthly for 7 years. I now have no clue who my users are and can’t email them either. They made their usernames and I think its BS you changed them. Why not just remove the @yahoo.com or whatever it is so you could at least figure out who the person was from the username. From not fixing bugs and very little interest in features and upgrades that the users want plus forcing your content on us its that time for me to move on. Just installed Jellyfin and will work my way over to that platform.
Is there anyway around the username? I can not for the life of me figure out which of my family members are who under my usersharing? or Is there anyway to see which usernames belong to which email address?
Can i ask one last Q
If someone i share user access with, sets up a multiple user feature on their plex
Does this count as 1 Sharee or 2 Sharees on my 100 Cap?
Example:
I set my parents up on plex using one user name
But my mom set up 2 accounts on her plex
She is the main and switch user is my dads account
Please let me know if it counts as one sharee or 2
That would not fit this thread!
so please avoid in the future, since derail the thread!
When said, sharing is with a regular user account, and does not cover managed accounts the user has
I have the same problem as @mo_malek007_gmail_com. The usernames that you auto-assigned are unintelligible, so I don’t know who is who. Keep in mind that the only reason these users even created Plex accounts was so that they could access my library. They have no interest in Plex other than that. They don’t care about being in the larger Plex community, tweaking their profiles, usernames, etc. They also don’t care about using universal watchlists, how to discover more, etc. Literally, the only time they use Plex is to access my library.
I’m sure there must be a technical or business reason why Plex did this, and it really doesn’t bother me other than I can no longer tell who is who. It seems silly that we should have to use WebTools-NG to see the email address (and therefore the identity) of the users we have invited via email. There is no privacy problem with showing their email on the “Home & Library Access” screen of my own server, I already know their email.
It seems like an easy fix for Plex, just add their email as another column on this screen. You can even keep the convoluted username on this screen. They are not going to change their username to something friendlier unless I instruct them to, and I don’t feel I should have to do that since the fix is so easy for Plex.
What a frustrating change. I’m also playing the guessing game now, trying to figure out which mutilated account name goes to which friend.
Worse than that - a friend of mine just reached out because their elderly father couldn’t remember what email address he signed up to Plex with. Before this change, I could have simply checked server logs and noted his email address.
If there’s any way for Plex to roll this change back, please consider it.
I disagree with having to use Tautulli do it. I don’t understand how hard for Plex to have both username and email address associated with that username listed. Its detail information that necessary, not optional.
Why would anyone keep a phone number in their contact list if the name of the person or business isn’t associated with it? You cant just go off just the phone number or in Plex’s case, the username, especially if users are free to change it at will. The email of that individual should be ideally also listed.
