I guess this has always been the case but I never noticed before. The name PMS shows is the plex.tv username. For security reasons I had kept my plex.tv username as my email to make it harder for someone to hack my account by guessing an easier to use username. Now with fast user switching I created managed users for my family which has a nice friendly name, but my email sticks out like a sore thumb. I can change my username in plex.tv to show a friendlier name but that would bring up the security issue I have. I want to use a nice easy name for my kids to identify the accounts easier, but I really do nto want to change my plex.tv account to something like "Dad" or my name. Also, plex.tv usernames must be unique so common names are probably already taken.
So, my request is to allow using an alias through PMS for the name that shows up instead of linking to the plex.tv username. Managed users are already an alias as they are not tied to any accounts. I would like the same for plex.tv users.
Whilst waiting for proper multi-user experience, I had set up accounts for my family members. I want to simply link that account to Plex Home but their email shows up which isn't a huge security issue or anything. But it'd be much nicer if we could have a nickname to make things neater and nice looking. And maybe a profile picture too!
Not to take away from the request, but in your case, it's possible you never added a username when you signed up for the accounts. You can log into plex.tv with the various accounts you have setup and edit/add a username at https://plex.tv/users/edit.
note: as MovieFan mentioned, with full users, those username will have to be unique, which is why he is requesting an alias for existing plex.tv users.
+1

You are completely right. I originally thought usernames were unique to each person and could not be changed. I simply go into the account setting and change it to whatever I want.
+1 for editable nicknames for users/friends. It would also be nice to see the e-mail associated with the account too (since we have to type it in the first place to add the user, I see no point in hiding it.
I always disliked that my shared library showed up as "generator", and with Plex Home this is even more annoying. My parents have no idea who this "generator" person is, and they don't have to know either :)
I wish this would get added (Yes, I liked the OP). Just want to bump it back up there. It seems odd to my family that all their names are up there, but mine says “sirmeili” instead of Dad or Frank.
This has to be a pretty simple change (relatively speaking that is).
I’ve has this same thought as well. I share my library with a number of different friends, and to be honest, I’m not sure what user name belongs to what person in a few cases so being able to create an alias would be very useful so I don’t have to remember that “example_user” is really “John Doe”.
I like this too. In our household life would be more simple if it said “Mummy”, “Daddy”, “Kid1” “Kid2” (please note that I do not number my kids in real life :), but I rather keep their names of the internet as long as I can).
