Thoughts on this Supermicro server Unraid for Plex

I was thinking about buying this server below. I just bought 8x12tb drives from best buy (need to shuck them).

I will be adding a graphics card as well probably another 1060 gtx with driver patch for HW transcoding.

Server Specs:
|PROCESSORS|Dual Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 2.6GHz 8 Core 20MB LGA2011 CPU Processors Installed
|MEMORY|64GB (8x 8GB) DDR3 ECC Registered Ram Installed|
|HARD DRIVE|24x Trays W. Screws Included
|RAID CONTROLLER|1x LSI 9210-8i HBA FREENAS UNRAID 6GBPS Conroller
|BACKPLANE|BPN-SAS2-846EL1
|SYSTEM BOARD|X9DRI-F|
|POWER SUPPLY|2x PWS-1K21P-1R Power Supplies Installed|
|RAILS|Generic Static Rails Included|

The CPU has some good scores on Pass mark: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5-2650+v2+%40+2.60GHz&id=2042

Is the controller good enough? Is there something wrong with this server? Should I avoid these cpus? Will the Graphics card fit/work fine with it? Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Maybe I’m missing something but if you plan to run unraid you don’t need a raid controller…

I would flash it to IT mode for Unraid right?

Ya, you want an HBA not a RAID controller. IT mode essentualy makes it into an HBA. exposing individual drives, SMART info, etc. I have a similar card with IT mode firmware and it works great to add extra SATA/SAS ports without all the hardware RAID nonsense.

@mervincm do you think the other specs are good? Is it overpriced? should i just by a barebones case and build one myself?

I don’t like the size/noise/power burn of old enterprise gear myself. that said, at least you are looking at gear thats not too terribly old. It is crazy overkill if it is just a plex server IMO.

A mid series motherboard, an 8 series i3, an IT mode firmwared LSI card from ebay, and a 10GiG NIC works absolute wonders for me.

PS I an not an unraid expert, I would check their forums.

@agaripian
Hey, I am curious did you pull the trigger on this server? I am looking at a very similar one from the same source. Thought I would see if you did this and if you have been satisfied with it so far?
