To pfSense or not to pfSense - what makes sense?

So I have been running a pfsense exclusively on its own pc. It’s has a 2 core celeron which actually may be a little over powered but I would recommend building a seperate rig for it. I don’t think that as vm you would get the benefits you would hope. I also keep it between the modem and the rest of my network that is then split via a switch.

pfSense is a spectacular firewall. I too run dedicated hardware, but my last build lasted a solid 8 years before upgrading.

This build easily handles 1000/500 with OpenVPN providing site to site to the lake as well as for various clients (phones/laptops) to get into the network.
