Tone mapping question

Can someone please explain why HDR to SDR tone mapping is NOT working on any of my mobile devices using Plex (iPad and android phone)?
I have heard the story about DV not being tone mapped due to licensing etc but I will tell you…it works on Emby and I know for a fact (confirmed with their dev’s) they did not pay for it to work. Plex is not even tone mapping content that is NOT in DV on my devices. I have confirmed that I have it turned on in the settings but its not working with any 4K HDR content all all.
Please advise, thanks

What devices do you have? Some newer devices can support HDR content so there is no need to tone map.

I’m currently using a Shield TV Pro in our home theater room, so everything works fine there. The problem comes in if I’m traveling, etc and use my android cell phone (S9+) or my iPad. On both of these devices, Plex is NOT tone mapping any 4K files at all. BUT…Emby will do it on the exact same devices…even Dolby Vision content.
So why is this not working using Plex???

I’m still not clear what you mean. Are you expecting pms to transcode? The S9+ supports HDR so it doesn’t need tone mapping. The Shield does too, and it will tone map locally if the tv it’s connected doesn’t support HDR.

Thanks for the response… Forget about the Shield, that is not the issue.
Problem is playing back 4K content on my S9+ or iPad using Plex. ALL 4K content plays back washed out as is NOT being tone mapped by Plex…even though it is turned on within the Plex settings. No idea if tone mapping pertains to transcoding or not.
Case in point: I have not changed ANY settings on my S9+ when it comes to video/HDR. So playing back the same exact 4K movie within Emby, it is tone mapped and NOT washed out. Playing this same 4K movie in Plex it IS washed out and NOT tone mapped.

As i said, your S9+ supposedly supports HDR so PMS will not transcode. I would need to see the android logs to verify what it detected. If it looks washed out, that means the device is not displaying the HDR properly. That may be an issue with the device, not the Plex app. The app is doing what it is told. I don’t know how Emby decides what to do. It may detect support differently or it may always transcode to SDR.

Double check the phone’s main video settings. See if there is an option related to HDR.

I have an S22 and it plays HDR content correctly without needing the transcode.

Was going to send you the android logs, but just noticed that its now working on the S9+. I tested it while in my home office and just a lamp on in the room. So ambient room like is not very bright. Wonder if the phone is throwing something off with HDR if light is brighter?? Will test it again later.
I don’t usually use my S9+ to watch Plex if traveling…its more my iPad. So any idea what could be the cause with that device? Let me know if there are logs or something you would need to look at.
Thanks again for your assistance.

Which ipad? The ios logs would help too.

It’s an iPad 6th generation (A1893 model). Here is the logs.

@anon18523487 Just checking in to see if you were able to find anything on my iOS logs?
Thanks

Still waiting for a response to the iOS logs I submitted to see why this is not working…
Thanks

Your logs show you are playing a Dolby Vision file. Can you check the XML info for that video and see if it is profile 5. Plex cannot tone map that profile so we play the file as -is.

So I played 2 4K movies prior to sending you the iOS Logs…1917, which is Dolby Vision and then 13 Hours, which is is just 4K HDR10 (HEVC Main 10). I did this so hopefully you could see that Plex is not tone mapping anything 4K on my iPad.

I looked at the XML info as you suggested for 1917 and it says DOVIProfile=“7”

@anon18523487 Just following up for a fix to this issue. 4K content, regardless of HDR and DV is still NOT being tone mapped at all on my 6th gen iPad. Please advise, thanks

Still waiting for a fix for this!

Is this a Synology issue or an iOS issue?

I see only iOS logs here
