Would it be possible (or easy) to make a plugin which would play a set number of random related (by genre/star/director) trailers and/or commercials (a la Grindhouse’s concession stand/rating bumpers) prior to a movie being started?
My idea for setup would be that the trailers/commercials would be local files placed in different folders by type (trailer/commercial) and further by genre. The plugin would be enabled/disabled in the options menu and apply to any movie being started.
I don’t know anything about coding for Plex, is anyone else interested in this?
I think it’s a great idea. A request for a Plex native implementation is discussed at length in this thread. Tokyovigilante mentioned that while it’s not a high priority, we may see something along this line when the new video player is launched. I’m no expert but, my understanding of the plugin framework suggests that the a plugin is not likely going to be able to achieve the desired functionality.
Would there be a way for it to be done by generating a random playlist prior to the movie starting?
Thanks for the link!
Since we have access to the library via the http protocol, I would think it should be possible to write a small script to generate a small playlist (with x number of items) from a library section of trailers and shorts. The tricky part IMO would be to find a way to tell Plex to play the videos, and more specifically generate the list and play them prior to a movie selection. At present, I don’t believe we have that sort of access to the video player and, although it’s been discussed in other threads (I don’t have any links ATM), we’re currently not able to tell Plex to run any sort of pre-show scripts.
That being said, Elan has said that trailers is a function that the dev team are planning on including with a “Plex twist”. When? and, in what form? are the obvious questions, but at this point I’m content to wait and see.
