Transcode Folder- how much storage?

How does Plex utilise the Transcode folder?

Does it only store the current transcode buffer?

So say for example, I have a 10GB file that is 60 minutes long.

If I have the transcode buffer set at 60 seconds (1% of file) does that mean that Plex stores 1% of the above file at any one time in the transcode buffer folder?

So 0.1GB at any one time?

The transcoder prefers to leave the previously transcoded segments until you’re done so you are free to seek all the way back to the beginning if you want.

If the space is small, it will start deleting the oldest segments to make room for what you’re playing now.

The question becomes: How many minutes of Seek-Backwards do you want?

32 gig is a safe minimum.

On Linux, if you have 64+ gig of ram, you can use /dev/shm for a temp ram drive.

Awesome thank you. Understand how it works now.

I’m running 64GB RAM with a few GB utilised at any one time. May aswell throw that towards a temp RAM drive for transcoding.

Thank you!
