When I convert video using a few apps, they have the ability to use the GPU to boost the speeds of the tasks. While it might not apply to everyone, my media server actually has a very good gaming video card in it (my old one). I'm wondering if it would be possible in the future to incorporate that feature into the transcoder to help it handle more without hitting the CPU as hard? If it could, it would mean I could go just that much longer before having to do a full server upgrade... (which costs way more than popping in a newer GPU or GPU computation card).
Despite being possible, GPU or hardware-accelerated video transcoding is very much in its early stages. I have yet to see a viable transcoder that produces consistently good results. So yes, maybe in 5 years this will be implemented, but the currently existing programs simply aren't good enough.
