"Transcoder crashed or failed to start" since updating to 1.7.5.4035

Oh fantastic. I just upgraded to 1.8.0, and now my server is dead. Nothing will connect, not even right click - “Open Plex” (localhost:32400).I just get

This site can’t be reached

localhost refused to connect.
Search Google for localhost 32400 web index
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

I have killed all Plex related items in task manager and restarted, same thing. I can not reboot right now because I have something running.

which server ? Is it Osiris which shows on your account?
When you tried http://localhost:32400/web and http://127.0.0.1:32400/web was the Plex Media Server.exe process running?
Could you reboot and the repeat the localhost test and get screenshot and the server logs
Take a copy of the logs folder and zip and attach
By default it is here C:\Users\xxxxxxxxxxx\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs

I had a look first at v1.7.1 as this is the first version which shows the regression for me. The only difference I can see is a missing (empty) e96c1d3-1208-linux-ubuntu-x86_64 directory under Codecs which existed in v1.6.1.

It seems PMS downloads the content for this directory from http://plex.tv/api/codecs/vp8_decoder

The resulting content using v1.6.1 is:

  • libaac_encode.so
  • liblibx264_encoder.so
  • libmpeg4_encoder.so.tmp-6499-x19b-xa05-1616
  • libvp8_decoder.so.

This directory seems crucial to enable transcoding the webm under v1.6.1. Copying it to the v1.7.1 Codecs directory does not help. After a transcoder failure on v1.7.1 (and v1.8.0) this particular directory is removed by PMS.

Please find the PMS v1.8.0 log attached. A sample media file can be downloaded here during the next 7 days.

For 1.8.0.4109 the codecs directory is 0affb08-1243-linux-ubuntu-x86_64 and the old version of PMS codecs directory
The directories are changed if there are changes in codecs in a release

You must not copy codecs from one release to another

It appears that the media file is using the vp8 codec and there is already an issue with that which has been reported to the development team. I will add your sample to that issue

I have the same issue with PMS 1.7.x and 1.8.0. Downgrading to PMS 1.6.1 solves the issue for me.

I’m running PMS on Ubuntu Precise amd64, both iOS and Android clients fail.

Would love to get logs and sample file on 1.8.0

I ran into this on Version 1.7.6.4058. I’m not going to test every single file, but I hit the “transcoder crashed or failed to start” on this file. This is the first time I have come across it, but I knw it has been a known issue lately so I came to post about it right away… I have attached the log zip, dumped after the third time I attempted to start playing.

It is a transcoder crash with process exiting
Aug 05, 2017 20:30:08.255 [17724] DEBUG - Jobs: 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\PlexTranscoder.exe' exit code for process 26116 is -1073741819

-1073741819 is FFFFFFFFC0000005 which is the windows Access Violation exception code C0000005

When you get 1.8.0.4109 up and running, see if the problem remains and if it is, then try to establish if same error arises for a smaller sample eg 5 minute clip of the video D:\Video\Video Files\Movies-HD\Dogma.(1999)\Dogma.(1999).avi
and please provide logs and sample
See https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201035968-Generating-Sample-Files-from-Media

Hopefully 1.8.0.4109 fixes this specific issue

I recently updated PMS to version 1.7.5.4035 and since then, every time I try to play a video on my Android device or Chromecast, I receive an error message saying “Plex transcoder crashed or failed to start”.

I’ve attached a copy of my log files.

Does anybody know if there is some way of getting around this? I mean, Plex is pretty unusable at the moment.

Update 1: videos fail to play on PS4 too, but without a specific error message about the transcoder.
Update 2: as seen below, the only resolution that has been found is to roll back to a previous version (1.5.7.4016 in my case). It’s not exactly an elegant solution, but hopefully an update will sort this out.

Are you in a position to try this D:\George\Videos\Plex\TV Shows\Curb Your Enthusiasm\Season 02\Curb Your Enthusiasm - S02E06 - The Acupuncturist.avi on version 1.8.0.4109 and to see if the problem is only when having subtitles

And if possible to try and create a 5 minute sample and see if that also crashes the transcoder and provide that as a sample with logs from 1.8.0.4109?

I did get 1.8.0 running, however it was not smooth. Rebooting did not help, nor did doing a repair install. I had to reboot, uninstall Plex, reboot again, then reinstall. The transcoder is no longer crashing with that specific movie.

Good that the transcoder issue is resolved.

If you have logs for the initial issues with 1.8.0 I can have a look

Thanks for your reply, I have updated to version 1.8.0.4109 to try this out.

I have tried to play the file with subtitles and the same error message occurred (I’m using iOS this time), however without subtitles the file loaded perfectly. The subtitles in question are external SRT files that I don’t actually need for this show, so I may just delete them so that it works.

Let me know if you still want me to provide a sample.

So yes please, sample with srt as well and logs of the problem and presumably the same media sample without the srt would work

Here is the link to the folder I have created on Google Drive with the files you have asked for.

Strangely enough, the file has been working both with and without subtitles when I was opening it for the activity to be logged.

Please let me know when you have finished with the shared folder so that I can clear up space on my Google Drive account.

This fixes the issue for me!

i see some people are trying to fix this transcoder problem by downloading an older version of plex, i only run plex on ROKU, is that even an option? i can’t just download files on ROKU, i just get to choose the channels i want to add, not really seeing access to versions. have not been able to use plex at all in a month since this issue came up.
