Transcoder Issues Persist in 1.9.5.4339 - 1.10.1.4561

Plex is still failing to end episodes. At the very end, with only 1 second remaining, I’m sitting again at a black screen and the orange loading/buffering indicator all while HTTP 404 pointing to a transcode directory and Shaka errors are getting spammed in my console.

In this particular example, the only transcoding plex was doing was AC3 to AAC. The Video was being doing as Direct Stream. The video shows in the Status as “Buffering” and “Converting (throttled)”. The video is in an MKV container with H264 video and AC3 5.1 audio. There are subtitles in the file, but they were not being used during playback. This is currently being done in Windows 10 Pro x64 on Chrome 61.0.3163.100 64-bit.

For more information, please read the thread that someone closed despite the issue not being resolved.

Installed 1.9.7.4441 today and the issue persists. I’ve only watched a couple episodes so far, but near the end of the episode the subtitles stop displaying and seconds before the video should end, it shows the buffering circle and doesn’t go anywhere. The subtitles missing near the end of the episode seems to have started up after I installed 1.9.7.4441. Audio and Video were showing up as Direct Stream under the status. More 404 errors pointing to a different file in the transcode folder and the shaka 1001 error. In case it helps, here’s the media info of the video I was watching a moment ago when this happened:

Media Info

I’m also having the same issue. Using the app.plex.tv portal playback exits and displays the shaka error modal on the dashboard, but using outside the portal (direct access) the playback stops at the end and spins forever - like @Draxhax has stated. I haven’t found any relevant logs, only the 404 with plex.direct in console. When accessing directly this only gives a warning apparently.
I suspect my apple tv is also encountering this issue also, but I get no error notifications just a spinner. I’m currently on build 1.9.7.4460 for debian and also viewing mkv videos of different varieties.
Also, pressing next still works. This seems to be an issue with only autoplaying.

I upgraded to 1.9.7.4460 on 11/15/2017 and experienced the stopping issue, though so far I haven’t run into the subtitle problem yet, but I have only watched a couple videos since upgrading as I’ve been focusing on the transcode failure. EDIT: The halting near the end of a video unexpectedly and subtitles disappearing still persist.

I did a bit of analysis on one of the videos that were halting and noticed that there were differences in duration reported for the video. MediaInfo was showing the duration of the MKV at 23mn 54s, but when I was looking at the actual tracks, the video and audio tracks weren’t that long, they were shorter by about 4 seconds… it was the subtitle track that was longer. There were two extra empty lines in the SSA file that I removed, but it still failed to end playback at the end of the video.

I’ve put the subtitle file back the exact way it was. Right now this file is an MP4 with an external SubStation Alpha subtitle file and the vast majority of the time it halts within the last second of the video. There is a rare occurrence where it will continue on, but otherwise, it just sits there ‘buffering’. Please note that I had Use hardware acceleration when available disabled during these tests.

I can also say that this is happening to me. Windows 10 x64 Pro and PMS 1.9.7.4460. It’s the absolute end of the show. Before this update I only got this problem during the last few minutes of a episode over Chromecast, but now it’s also on the web browser.

I got “Use hardware acceleration when available” disabled and have had it since day one when I started to get these issues on the Chromecast.

Happens all the time for me now. Didn’t really happen all that often before. I’m using Edge for the web player.

Updated topic title to reflect the issues still persisting in 1.10.0.4523.

ditto, experiencing that issue as well.

All working fine for myself and my users.

since the upgrade of 1.10 ?

Yep. All good

Please ignore accepted answer. Could have sworn I clicked “no”

Anyways, please indicate information regarding media / environment. Patterns in issues cannot be gleaned through lack of information.

@Stephen3001 – you say yours is all good for you and your users. Is any of your media actually having to be transcoded? If so, what from and what to? What containers, codecs, is anyone using subtitles, if so, what format, etc.

As I was writing this reply, an episode for a series I was watching just had it happen again. It seemed like today was going to be a good day, but the show I was watching just moments ago did it again.

I scrolled up in my chrome console to the point these errors first started appearing and it looks like it was within 68 seconds to the end of the video.

The Plex status window indicated that it was Converting and Video / Audio were both Direct Stream. No subtitles were in use nor available. Updated server logs are attached.

As an additional test, I put a copy of one of these videos in the Plex Cloud and on Plex Cloud, if I just quickly jump to the end of the video, it kicks me back and pops up with an actual error: An error occurred trying to play this item. shaka1001 (Network) and the same occurs if I just let the video play from the beginning. I have 2 different servers with vastly different hardware, plus Plex Cloud … all which replicate either halting at the end of the video with shaka errors in the console or the video simply closing with a shaka error.

@Draxhax The majority of my users rely on an iPad/Android Tablet casting to a Chromecast via a remote connection. I use direct stream to OpenPHT for my viewing.

All of my media is ripped clean from DVD/Bluray, no re-encoding via Handbrake. The max outgoing stream size I have set is 8Mb/s 1080p.

Not all users stream at that rate, some users only accept SD, so the transcode is also doing a resolution reduction.

One user has a hard of hearing person, so all streamed material to that user has subtitles on.

No reports or complaints of what you are seeing.

Could it be that the transcoder is running out of disk space for the transcode?

@Stephen3001 – Thanks for the extra information, I really appreciate it. I may not have looked hard enough there, but I didn’t see the container these are being held in. I do have some files with DTS audio, but the majority of mine are AAC/AC3.

I had thought of possible space issues before and that was one of the first things I checked out. I can re-allocate more disk space, but it currently has 33GB free and the files I seem to be able to replicate this consistently on are 1/3rd the size of the one I just had it happen on earlier. I have larger files (though not quite a large as the one you gave as reference) that go through transcoding that don’t seem to be replicating the problem consistently.

The actual device the media is stored on still has 899GB free on it, so that certainly isn’t it there either. I have a server in my home, an off-site server, and I do have Plex Cloud configured as well. All 3 replicate some form of the issue. The Plex Cloud server actually closes the video and displays the shaka error on screen (instead of me having to see this in the console logs). Nearly all of my media is encoded in H264 stored in an MKV container. The audio varies a bit as I’ve been experimenting with different audio codecs, but normally I swap between AAC/HE-AAC or AC3; but, I haven’t seen anything that points to the audio codec being the issue.

With my available drive space under 1TB, I’ve been looking to convert my larger videos from H264 to HEVC until I can afford to increase my storage capacity. I took the first video I posted the info for and converted it to HEVC and left it in an MP4 container. So far, it seems to be working, even with subtitles, but I haven’t put it through a ton of tests yet. I also want to move it over to an MKV to see if that’s where things really start to break down. Nearly all of my media is in MKV format, mostly for convenience with subtitles as a fair amount of my media doesn’t have English audio.

This is something that’s been driving me bonkers since this new interface/transcoder has gone into place as it completely ruins binge watching.

Thanks again for the info and your time reading through my long-winded posts!

Actually I may have spoken to fast. Somehow when I tried right after the latest upgrade the problem persisted. But I rebooted the macmini hosting plex server and the apple tv and everything seems back to normal now. No more “déjà-vu” effect, time jump and skipping to the end of the video.
So after a couple of days it seems that everything is working normally again.

@Drahax The Containers are MKV’s

Well I take it back even with Version 1.10.0.4523 is really not working well.

Setup:

  • macmini with PMS Version 1.10.0.4523
  • player is a 1080p Apple TV with latest Plex App
  • everything is cabled 1000mbps

Issue that I am encountering are:

  • during seemingly any feed (crappy 720p tv series, high quality 1080p movies)
  • randomly the feed will “load” (spinner) for an instant and resume with often a jump of a few seconds in time
  • feed will repeat itself for a couple of seconds (like a déjà-vu effect)
  • feed will randomly jump in time fast forward but progress bar looks like nothing happened, if I stop the feed and then resume it, the video will show something totally different than when I stopped it (basically back to the normal point in time it should have been)

It’s crazy annoying… basically can’t watch anything correctly anymore.

Oh, and this seem to happen mostly in “direct stream” mode.

@aponsin How is the Network setup. What sort of switch/router are you using in your Network?

It sounds like the player is buffering or getting an interrupted stream. Anything else on the network that might cause some network traffic (e.g. someone gaming, downloading things)?

I have been fortunate enough not to run into issues quite that severe. The problem I have is with the transcoder apparently failing to create the last part of the video. Strangely, on Plex Cloud, the video does quit out, but it terminates and displays the shaka error instead of continuing to the next episode. On my other servers, it doesn’t quit out; it just sits there buffering forever, waiting for the part the transcoder apparently decided not to create and I have to manually close the episode or skip to the next one. I have yet to see anything in my logs that point to the reason this is occurring and it’s even more frustrating that the Plex staff has yet to acknowledge the problem. What’s the point of posting logs if nobody looks at them?

I’m working on updating to 1.10.1.4561 which seems like it should address the subtitle issue I’ve been having… So – fingers crossed!

UPDATE:

I’ve finished my update to 1.10.1.4561. The transcoderdoes still seem to fail to produce the last part it needs to finish the video, however I now actually receive the shaka error on my screen and it quits the video. So … at least that’s something. I was still able to replicate the subtitles failing to load, but seeking further back into the video caused them to begin appearing again … but at least in the second video I tested it still seemed like the last couple lines in the file were cut off. Though the videos I’m working with, the subtitles go up until nearly the last second and the transcoder issue may be causing my subtitle issue (though I don’t really know.) I still find it odd that -sometimes- the video ends as expected. But it doesn’t matter if it’s my hardware or whatever hardware Plex has on their cloud service, it definitely does have a failure going on in the transcode. I’m thinking of just redoing all of these videos, but it’s quite time consuming to do when this was working with the older stuff. hehe
