Transcoding doesn't work on pretty new Alder Lake

I’d suggest you try installing the hardware enablement (HWE) kernel packages. Something like:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-22.04

This provides some additional hardware support (and I think I remember seeing cases where it’s been necessary in the past for very new Intel CPUs and integrated GPUs).

For what it’s worth, I run one of my Plex servers on Pop 22.04 LTS and it works well. However, I’m not on Alder Lake (mine is Jasper Lake).

@pshanew

If you look at his logs, He’s getting HW transcoding.

You see the PUT statements but there are not GET statements.

Is that what you also experienced ?

@ChuckPa I’ve not looked into the logs yet, no. It was more a general suggestion.

The comment about working on Pop OS for me was just anecdotal. I generally agree that folks should stick to the specifically supported distros.

I got HWE already @ChuckPa

hwe-support-status --verbose
Your Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is supported until April 2027.

That’s what I thought you’d get when you installed.

Ubuntu is keeping on target with the HWE kernel for the newer CPUs so the newer kernels work as expected (why I suggested going this route)

Which firewall do you have ?

There should be no firewall (or wifi isolation) between your players and your server on your home network.

You should not need to Whitelist anything.

I’m running Firewalla but excluded the PMS, so it’s not monitored at this point

I’m already on the latest “6.5.0.14.14~22.04.7”

@pshanew

Do you think this could be a topology issue?

I know AlderLake isn’t a new CPU family and it’s a stable transcoding platform.

I’ve not been able to look at the logs (they’re unavailable for some reason) unfortunately, so I’m not sure where it’s getting to in the process. Given that they say that direct play works I wouldn’t think so, but to be fair I’m not entirely sure how the transcoder works with the network (other than the localhost).

I’m trying it on localhost (and I tried ith w/ FireTV) w/out success

I guess that’s it … no transcoding for me,

@thobu

We’re trying to help you , and all the other users.

There is a fair amount of testing / trying we do behind the scenes.

Yes, something is amuck here, and sometimes they take a bit to resolve, but on an this CPU, with this Distro – it works.

The problem is finding out WHAT is different about your machine & installation which is preventing it.

When I get a little time, if you’d like, I can share the desktop with you and get into the machine to see What The Heck.

Would that work?

This has been barely 2 days and you’re giving up??

hey, I’d be glad if you could take a look, mind my tz (utc+1).

@thobu

I’m very familiar with CET timezone. (was both Student and have family there)

Which times work for you?

nice, I’m flexible (but i’m out of town from 23rd onwards)
