Server Version#:1.12.1.4885 on RPi / Openmediavault
Player Version#: iOS latest version
Hi, I’m at a bit of a loss and at a dead end with a project I was hoping to complete before a long flight on Friday that I am hoping to use it on. My issue is I don’t understand why the server is transcoding what seems to me to be a standard resolution stream.
I’ve built a portable Plex server based on a Raspberry Pi4 running Openmediavault with a USB3 500GB Samsung SSD and a TP-Link wireless router. It all works fine. Clients are an iPhone 8 and an iPad Pro, both running latest versions of Plex player. I’m struggling to update the server version but don’t see that as my underlying problem.
My content is from my Region 2 DVD’s ripped with makemkv.
Plex player playback info on iOS reports video as 1024x576 @5.7Mbps Transcode(MPEG2VIDEO - H264), audio as Transcode (AC3 - AAC) and player AVPlayer. Transcode Reason - Apps cannot play this item. No direct play video profile exists for protocol http, with container mkv and video codec mpeg2video.
Can anyone explain why this is being transcoded please? This is a real show stopper because the Pi platform doesn’t have the compute power for the transcode so effectively has killed stone dead this project as I’m getting video at 300kbps.
If I can’t solve this I’ll just have to stick to my Sandisk Connect drive which will allow me to play the files direct without faffing about with transcoding.
If I’m doing something stupid here I’m happy to learn. It just seems stupid to transcode something that doesn’t to me seem to need to be transcoded as the player devices can cope with the format natively and are connected to the server wirelessly.
Any suggestions very welcome.
