Hello!
I have Roku and plex on 5 different televisions in our household. I have the following:
3 seperate Roku Streaming Stick+ - Connect via 5ghz wifi.
I have 1 Roku Ultra - connected with Ethernet
I have 1 Roku TV - connected with Ethernet.
My Plex Media Server is on a Windows desktop PC - Connected with Ethernet.
The Roku Ultra and Roku TV connected with Ethernet work great. No problems at all.
The 3 Roku Streaming Stick+ I have alot of problems with. The video takes a long time to load and once loaded and playing they often buffer. Not only that, but even the shows, movie, and music thumbnails take a while to load.
I do not think it has to do with setting within Plex Media Server or the Plex players on the Roku’s due to the fact I have tried all sorts of settings, and the fact that it takes the thumbnails a while to load. But I am not sure.
Is there some sort of setting suggested for Plex or my Router that I can try to solve this?
Also, I have tried the 2ghz and 5ghz connections, for all Roku devices as well.
Given your streams work fine on the wired devices, this very much seems to be a problem with your home wireless network. When it comes to WIFI/WLAN, there’s a lot of potential environmental factors that’ll impact your setup… e.g.
distance between router/client
position of the router, the client devices
walls, furniture, electronic devices… being “in the way”
general load of the network
conflicts with neighboring networks on the same bands / frequencies
…
Sadly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer on what to fix.
Sometimes it can be enough to re-arrange the router in order to get some better coverage. Some routers have an automatic re-configuration to find network bands not occupied by your neighbors.
If your devices support wired connections where you don’t have ethernet cables, it can sometimes be helpful to use power-line network to “bridge” such a gap.
I’m not familiar with those Roku Streaming Sticks+ and their performance. I guess they’re not just simply slow?
Awesome, thank you for the advice. I hope that isnt the best this forum can come up with though. I would and could agree with you about the distance from the router and walls causing interference, etc. However, 1 of the 3 Roku Streaming Sticks + is in the same bedroom as the router and hanging like 2-3 feet above it on the wall. Still does it.
I don’t think its a congested network. I intentionally designate the 5ghz only for the 3 tv’s with the Roku streaming sticks+ and rarely are any of them on at the same time. 2 at the most.
I keep our router and extender on seperate end of the house and on different channels/frequencies. AND the Roku streaming sticks did this BEFORE I even added the extender to the network.
I don’t think its the general load of the network since EVERY OTHER app (netflix, hulu, prime, slingtv, etc) on the Roku Streaming Sticks work just fine. Also, I monitor load and data use.
It is really puzzling me, and I’m determined to figure it out. Yes, Roku’s bottom end devices are slow. They are bad actually. Roku higher end devices are pretty good however.
