Troubleshooting a transcoding issue.

Hi all,

I have a problem where Plex continually buffers during a transcode, but I’m having problems narrowing down where the actual bottleneck is.

My current plex setup is as follows;
1x plex server running as a HyperV guest with 8cores, 8124Gb of RAM (running debian)
1x Synology NAS
1x CISCO gigabit switch

I have tried the plex server on multiple computers both with an SSD and without. I have now created a RAM drive and have plex transcoding to that to rule out any IO botthlenecks.

I have followed this guide; https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201575036-Why-is-my-video-stream-buffering- but it wasn’t much help. I don’t have any ‘speed’ strings logged even when verbose logging is turned on.

Plex will buffer when transcoding to web client, android client and to the chromecast as I have tried all 3 individually.

Is there anything else I need to look at?
Could it be possible that more than a gigabit connection is required from the NAS to the Plex server?

The one thing you didn’t specify is the CPU. In almost all cases, transcoding issues such are you describing because, in spite of total Passmarks, the per-core passmark rating isn’t strong enough.

And the media??
What who why format etc etc

thanks @spikemixture

I forgot to ask as well as; Subtitles in use?
