TrueHD/Dolby Atmos when?

When will Plex support TrueHD/Dolby Atmos on AppleTV or Roku? Based on what I have read so far the choices are Nvidia Shield or a PC. Seems like this shouldn’t be this difficult for Plex to figure out and has been complained about for years without any change. So what is the deal Plex? Did I pick the wrong product to have as a lifetime subscription?

Not supported on Apple TV due to Apple restrictions. Pretty sure it is the same for Roku.

If you want TrueHD/Atmos passthrough your choices are an Nvidia Shield Pro, Xbox One, or a PC.

The non-Pro Shield (“tube” model) is not recommended as it has trouble with high bit rate media such as 4K HDR rips and remuxes.

Note that while Plex for Windows and Plex HTPC support TrueHD passthrough, they do not support displaying HDR video. HDR video direct plays, but will be tonemapped to SDR by the application.

Additional details:

Thanks for the information. I know Apple really doesn’t play well with others and could care less about most things that are not their owned apps or content but thought maybe Roku might since they are not as proprietary as Apple tends to be. It just sucks at the consumer level finding that “one device” that fits everything you want it to do but that is nothing new.

what you are finding, is that most streaming products support content from actual streaming services (ie netflix etc).

none of those services use or support truehd/dts-hd-ma.

the only real source of HD audio is from ripped 4k/blurays.

which most manufacturers don’t seem to want to touch with a 10 foot pole, if they are even aware of it.
