This sounds like it could be a bug.
If you toggle subtitles on the the TV (or via the CC button on the remote) when you are on a preplay or during playback, it will toggle subtitles in Plex, but otherwise should have no effect. Still it’s worth checking if subtitles are enabled on the TV (and if so, disabling them) in case something is wrong there.
@mediacenterkodi84: I’ve made a note to check this out when I have the chance. I’ll get back to you if I figure it out or need more info.

Sounds good, it doesn’t seem to be specific to any tv show, happens on all of them. Thanks again!
well this is embarrassing but apparently the TV settings for CC has been ON this whole time. Which is even stranger because until this Plex update nothing has ever even shown me subtitles (netflix, disney+, old Plex version, etc). But I flipped the setting in the TV menu to off and now plex no longer autoplays with subtitles. Thanks!
@KHthe8th: Yeah, it sounds like there is a bug. It shouldn’t have been forcing subtitles. Like I said, it should only change them one way or the other if you toggle the setting/button while on a preplay or during playback. I’ll file an issue and take a look at it. Thanks for reporting it.
I feel dumb asking this, and not sure if I’m the only one that noticed this…
During playback, when I pause and go into settings to turn on subtitles, how do I exit back into the video file? I get permanently stuck in the Settings with no seemingly obvious way to get back.
There is a bug with player settings that can sometimes cause this. It should be fixed in the next update.
@mediacenterkodi84: Could you enable logging on the Plex app (see below) then play one of the affected videos until the issue occurs and then send me PMS logs (see below)?
Enable Plex app logging: You can find Settings at the bottom of the sidebar. Change Settings->Advanced->Log to media server to your PMS server.
PMS logs: On the web client click the settings button in the upper right, click Troubleshooting on the left sidebar and the select DOWNLOAD LOGS and the PM that to me.
@mediacenterkodi84: If you haven’t done it already, why don’t you hold off on the logs. I think we might have tracked down the issue. I’ll ask again if that turns out not to be the case, but no use wasting your time if it isn’t.
Sounds good to me @ruuk. Just let me know if you need anything. I have noticed that it doesn’t stop it midway like I had previously thought, it pauses it and if you attempt to resume, nothing happens till you back out of the video and restart playback.
We’ve got a fix that will be in the next update.
The issue is related to the Terminate Sessions Paused for Longer Than setting in PMS. Basically there was a bug with how we were reporting playback status to PMS, so PMS would think we were paused during the whole playback. Since our reporting was wrong, we weren’t getting the message for playback termination, which is why there was no message when it happened.
Thanks! It was quite irritating haha. I will let you know if I run into anything else! You guys rock.
The new UI looks great on my 75" P-series Quantum “SX7B(2)”, but the media entries are larger than ever and it’s annoying to scroll more. I’m not too happy about list/compact view being removed either.
Could an option to significantly reduce the UI or size of media entries be added so that A LOT more entries can be viewed on the screen without scrolling?
Preview Update: Version 5.0.6
- Fix subtitles being forced on when starting playback and TV setting was enabled
- Fix
Movies & TVextras failing to play - Fix getting stuck in playback settings after editing a setting
- Disable artwork screensaver in favor of the simple screensaver for now as it can result in fatal errors on these TVs, we’ll look at bringing this back if/when we can
- Fix playlist items being hidden after deleting a playlist item
- Fix audio player not closing when final item in the play queue finished
- Post Play: Update the previous item watched state
- Post Play: Fix various UI issues and improve next/previous focus
While some prefer and can scan densely packed items quickly, for others it’s easier to scan if the items have greater separation. We also have titles/info with the items instead of needing to focus an item to see this which also can make it easier to scan through items as the title is in a predictable place for each item, which of course also separates the items more. I’m not trying to convince you that the new design is without question better than the old, I’m just letting you know some of the reasons I’m aware of for the change.
The list view should return in the future, but probably after the preview replaces the current app.
I’ve made a note to talk about this and see what we can do.
To be clear, I basically want to zoom out the media entries (reduce font size, width, height). The ideal setting for people is super subjective and depends on many factors, such as screen size, viewing distance, and even their eye sight.
From where I normally sit, you could reduce everything to 75% (or more) and everything would remain legible, but I also wouldn’t mind getting up and standing next to the TV to scan through stuff even faster.
Also, I don’t know whether Vizio apps can do this, but when list view is re-added, if it’s possible to repurpose the Channel Up/Down buttons (or some other universally unused buttons in app on controller) and use them to skip to next section/screen listing (similar to using Page Up/Page Down keys on a browser), that’d be super amazing for fast scanning through media entries.
I think I might be missing something here. After updating to 5.0.6, a visualizer button appears during audio playback, and clicking it brings up a menu of visualizers, but picking one does nothing. Is this not fully implemented yet?
Heh, yeah that button shouldn’t be there
. That’s very experimental for TVs in general, but it didn’t work at all so far Vizio, so it may not ever show up if we can’t overcome that. It looks like we missed the button when disabling it.
Thanks for the report. I’ll file an issue to hide the button.
Preview Update: Version 5.0.7
- Fix video possibly being hidden when starting playback or changing settings/streams
- Settings: Add manual servers
- Fix possible No Content message overlaying some hub screens
