New Samsung Tizen App Preview

As you may have noticed, we’ve been working hard on a rewrite of the Plex application for our smart tv platforms. We first opened up a public preview for the VizioSmartCast and now we are ready to present to you a preview of the Tizen application!

Just like the Vizio version of the preview, this application has been rewritten from the ground up, taking advantage of WebGL for better performance.

This preview release should include much of the same features as the existing Tizen application, but there are still a few features that are currently missing (like TIDAL and DVR scheduling) as we work towards feature parity. However, we did bring in some much-requested features as well like Skip Intro and a the Live TV Guide.

We will eventually be replacing the current Plex app that’s in the Samsung store with this version once we’ve reached parity and ironed out the kinks. We’re looking for feedback and reports about functional issues with the preview app. Does anything not play as expected? Does a particular action cause a crash? Does clicking a button not perform the action? Is something not displayed on the screen correctly? While we’re certainly interested in feedback about UI/UX of our apps in general, this new preview app is intended to follow the same basic UI design of our other current (TV layout) apps.

How to access the preview:

  • Tizen 2.4, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 UHD devices (2016-2019 UHD devices)
    • 2020 devices are still under testing by Samsung, once released the announcements post and this post will be updated
  • Make sure you are on version 4.29.6 of the Plex app.
  • Choose ‘Enable Early Access’ in the user options menu of the current app. If you want to return to the old app, select ‘Leave Early Access’ from the user options menu in the preview version of the app.
    • If you don’t see the option to enter early access, try restarting the app by force closing it (hold down the back button on your remote until the app closes) or if that fails, try reinstalling the app from the store.

How to report issues:

You can use forum tag tizen-preview or reply to this post when posting questions or issues about our preview. Please include the TV model and firmware version. To find this, from your TV’s Settings, it’s under Support -> Contact Samsung for 2016 devices, and Support -> About this TV for 2017+. Model Code is the model, Software Version is the firmware. You can ignore everything before the 4-digit number for the firmware version (eg. T-MSMAKUC-1356.2, we just need the 1356.2).

I just turned in the preview, and like it for the most part, but it’s missing TV theme songs. The option to enable them in settings isn’t even there anymore.
Also movies and TV really need tags for HDR. When you select something it will take you SD/4K and give audio data (5.1AAC) but it doesn’t tell me when the video is HDR.

I really miss my themes a lot though. I put a lot of work into collecting themes for all shows on my server.

TV is Tizen 5.0 on a 2019 Samsung Q90R and it’s running the new version of the app that came out today.

Looks good and works well, still picks up HDR / Atmos fine and skip intro!

The player itself is a bit bland there, are there any plans to add more info, like say the current quality / bitrate / audio track?

Same issue missing TV theme songs.

I have 4.29.6 on Tizen 3.0, but I cannot find where to turn on the preview. Where exactly is that setting?
SOLVED: I re-installed the app, and now the setting has appeared.

I have 5.0.9 on Tizen 3.0 on a UE65MU8009 with firmware 1280.5, and Plex gives a “Device Resolution” of 1920x1080 even though this is a 4K TV. Is that to be expected?

BUG: when I leave the screensaver, the screen remains gray during playback. Sound and subtitles work. I had to stop playback to get it to work again.

I know this is probably a common question, but are there any plans to port this to non-UHD TVs?

I’ve been using a Samsung UE43M5500 with Tizen 3.0 and my app is still at 3.3.4. It’s a bit of a shame to be left in the dust with respect to features like Skip Intro and Collections, but I understand you can’t support all legacy devices. That said, would it be possible to port this to lower-versioned TVs?

Hey! Got it installed, will be taking it for a spin in a bit.
One thing appears off though. My tv is a Samsung uhd from 2016 ou 2017, not quite sure. It’s running at 4K, it says so when I turn it on.
Why does plex say that it’s at fullhd, in the settings - About menu?? “Device resolution “.

Second point, this new (?) player is forcing transcoding of content that used to direct play before:

Video:
1080p (HEVC Main 10) (hw)
1080P (H264)—Transcode (hw)

That’s kind of annoying. I got lots of HEVC content :frowning:

I just happened to be browsing the settings menu of the app on my Samsung TV for the first time ever and saw the Early Access and it happens to be within a few hours of this being released. Crazy coincidence.

In the new interface, if I go to Settings > About, Device Resolution shows 1920x1080 but I have a 4K display (75NU8000). Is this an error?

Live TV Guide - Oh thank you so much, You won’t believe how frustrating it has been not having this, thank you again and it looks absolutely fantastic!!

Update: I can’t stop admiring the Guide - It is amazing - have been waiting so long for this.

Like others, even though I was already running 4.29.6, I had to reinstall it to gain the ‘Enable Access’ option.

I’ve only had a quick play with the app and not played any content yet so all my findings below are visual and quiet minor grips really, but I thought it best to report my findings:

  • As others have reported the resolution appears to be 1920 x 1080 rather than 4K.
  • The pinned items were not remembered after upgrading.
  • The pinned items look a little larger than they used to be. This might be an optical illusion as the font is different now (when I switch back to the old app and compare it). I used to see 7 menu items (including my user at the top) and now I get 7 and a three quarters. It would be nice if the 8th item was whole.
  • Can the display of the server name, for the home server, in the pinned items be turned off? I know the name of my own server and don’t need to be reminded of it when I scroll over the items
  • I also don’t see the point of having the 'Settings ’ menu present at the bottom of the list when it is available from the user screen.
  • A thin scrollbar is present in Live TV & DVR -> Browse which the old app didn’t have. What's On doesn’t have it either and I don’t think it is needed personally, however, it would be nice to have the Alphabet Picker when browsing content by Name.
  • The Alphabet Picker doesn’t stretch to the full length of the TV like it does in the Plex for Windows client. So if you are missing a few letters then there is a gap at the bottom of the screen. If you are missing half the alphabet then the letters only fill half the screen.
  • When browsing shows and movies either via the guide or via Browse there is a Watch Now option, even for future shows which isn’t possible as they may be 1 hour away or 1 day or 1 week from now.
  • When watching a recorded show, there are no rewind and fast forward buttons, only start of show, pause and start of next show are present.

Update: I’ve now been using the preview as my daily way of consuming media on my main TV. As such I have found a few more issues which I have added to the list.

Bug: Feedback Sounds keep turning on when app is started even though the tick box is disabled.

Bug: Fwd and Rwd when watching a TV Show does not play where expected. It suddenly jumps ahead or behind when playback commences.

In addition the pinned front menu text appears slightly out of focus.

Lastly on front dashboard watched content uses the orange top right triangle in corner, but when in a TV Series the unwatched indicator is now an orange line on bottom of ep preview. Some consistency required across UI.

Hi nice job now the app feel more responsive, if I use the Samsung Android app to control the TV I can’t select nothing. I miss the information about the current playback .
Tnx and nice job again

Samsung MU6100

BUG:

App says resolution is 1920x1080 when it is a 4K tv and would direct play 4K content on the previous version.

Changes I do not like:

I could previously highlight a show or movie from the home screen and press the play button on the remote to play a show or movie, it no longer works and I have to go down a menu level to play what I want.

Subtitles do not have shadows and aren’t as easy for me to read.

The streaming info overlay option has been removed… Why?

Still no auto quality?

Not a big fan of the new look for the interface. It looks cheap compared to the old interface. Like amazon vs netflix. May have to do with the 1920x1080 bug?

I personally feel like it ran smoother on the old version as well.

Things I like:

Skip intro works very well in my testing.

The app is much quicker loading in images.

How do you update to 4.29.6? I seem to have 4.21.2. Auto update is on and reinstall just loads the same version.

I’ve tested this version in Q70R, and found it to be working perfectly, so far no problem found.
Tested with a 4k HDR film, and it worked flawless, direct stream.

Quick test and this is my impresion:

  • Feedback Sounds are not preserved. If you turn it off and then close the app and open it again the “click” sound is back.

  • Not watched indicator is not consistent (Upper right corner on the main screen) Botton line on the Show page. On the show screens is hard to find which ones are watched (apart from the options changing on the botton of the screen)

  • Settings options (while display) and the other modifiers are in two different sides of the screen. It took me a while to find how to change the subtitles.

So far that is the first things I saw.

The new app seems to only run at 1080p - interface is blurry and overscaled, and the resolution listed in settings is 1920x1080. I’m rolling back for now for this reason.

My impressions:

  • Video preview thumbnails doesn’t show;

  • Subtitles stays white, even with my .srt files forced to yellow and selecting yellow in the plex settings.
