Trying to back up Plex Media Server database on Windows 11

Server Version#: 1.40.3.8555-fef15d
Player Version#:

I am trying to back up my Plex Media Server database so if something goes wrong I can try to restore it. I found a video from four years ago, but that doesn’t work because when I try to copy the media server in the registry no luck.

I tried exporting it, but all it does is export the registry key. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thank you for your time. Take care.

What does that mean?

You need to backup both the Plex data folder, as well as the registry branch.
Only backing up one of them is not sufficient.

Thank you for your reply. I found the data is saved in a different location. I saved the registry entry as well as the data now.

Unfortunately while saving it even though I had the Plex Media Server off it lost one of the TV series I had up and just won’t find it again. I will either have to rip all the episodes again and rename them unless there is a way to go in and make them visible again to Plex.

I also will go get your script and though I have used them in many apps I can say I have never used a Power Shell I will have to learn that as well.

Take care and thank you again.

I’m pretty certain that this has nothing to do with the backup procedure.
Things like this are pretty much always caused by poor file naming and folder structure.

Each file is put in the TV Shows folder then the Season 02 folder and then named such as the following episode “Battlestar Galactica Season 2 (2006) - s02e17 The Captain’s Hand.mp4”. There are no quote marks in the title I just used them here to ensure the name stands out.

It follows exactly the format they specify in their support area.
I don’t know what happened, but every episode disappeared.

Thank you for the link though. Take care.

Set the library view mode to “Episodes”,
then activate the “Duplicates” quick filter.
Are there any? If so, inspect their Plex media info for the file and folder names. The missing series might have been merged with another similarly named series.

Inspect the Collections tab as well. If there is a Battlestar collection, dive into it and look for the missing show in there.

You are right the missing series has been merged with another. How do I separate them. I have them in differently named folders, but haven’t figured out how to separate them again. Where will I find the Plex media info is that when I choose to edit for example the title or poster area.

Thank you for all you have done and helping me figure out some things.

I did find the media info and it all reads correctly, but it is still merging it with a completely different folder.

Orange text is a hyperlink. Click it.

Go to the top level of the show (i.e. click on the title)
then pick Split from the ellipsis menu
then determine which of the now duplicated shows is which, again using the plex media info
then either perform Fix Match on the show with the wrong title

or

Rename the top level folder of the mis matched show, so that it cannot be mismatched by Plex anymore.
The rules are linked above.
Then perform the Plex Dance with this whole show.

Thank you very much solved everything as I said learning Plex and I don’t always know where to find the info in their support articles.

I will keep plugging away. Thank you again.
