The one thing missing from the beta, that I find very frustrating, is the lack of a Grid type program guide that gives quick browse access to upcoming shows. When is this road-mapped?? What about a manual record, where I can tell it to record a channel with start/end times?
Other than that, awesome initial release. I look forward to be able to access the Live content via Plex so I can use my Roku for TV. The HDHomeRun channel options seem to no longer work.
This is something that I just would like to second - I would really like to see what is on sorted by channel, like a traditional guide. Otherwise same here - loving it so far.
Gotta add a me too here. In particular the ability to record shows that for some reason aren’t picked up in the EPG - even though I can find the show before and after.
I wouldn’t hold your breath on the grid-style EPG. Rovio actually owns the patent on that design and can shut down the use of it on other platforms. So unless Plex wants to pay a licensing fee for it, you’ll have to get used to this style.
I’m on board for manual recording if you feel it’s necessary for you. But I actually love the way Plex DVR lays it out - I can get to content much more quickly than with a grid. I’m looking for shows, not for channels. But I understand the desire for a grid.
The actual HDHomeRun DVR software is in the same boat - they have a different layout for their EPG, but it’s the same concept that the Plex DVR uses. You can check out the discussion on the issue over at their forums: https://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=128&t=38004
Yep. Rovio/Tivo’s ongoing patent lawsuit war over grid guides means very few companies are willing to do that any more. I’m sure the licensing isn’t cheap, either.
Grid guides FAR pre-date either of these companies. They go back before personal computers. Anyone granted a patent on the concept should have it revoked as it was a common concept.
Okay, okay I got it - Grid Program Guide is a Holy Grail and guarded by Horsemen of Apocalypse so no one can use it. But how about simple option for manual recording? Time and channel, that’s all I need.
Well – we’re all paying for DVR effectively (though Plex Pass), so hopefully they can add the feature even if there’s a licensing fee. I have a Tablo as well (which I’ll be dropping soon if things work out well with Plex), and I paid a nominal annual rate for their grid-based EPG which I assume funds any licensing fees they might be paying.
I can’t believe it’s patented, and that the patent #1 has not expired, and #2 cannot be circumvented.
Does anyone know how Tablo implements the Program Grid? The cost structure is similar to Plex, and the ability to see what’s playing on which channel over 24 hours is a great feature; esp those wanting to cut the cord. Plex DVR is fantastic by the way. I haven’t decided between the Plex/HDHomeRun setup or Tablo DVR. Trying to wait for final feature set to be unveiled. The cable monopoly has got to fall; paying in the thousands of dollars for a TV signal is outrageous!
