TV Show Libary - Local Filenames?

I have a DVD collection (Scholastic Video Collection: Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics) that I put into a library using the TV type even though it doesn’t exist in TVDB (Tried to add it and someone deleted it without messaging me - ugh). I figured I could use separate the the 16 DVDs into 16 seasons.

I named the files like shown below:

Scholastic Video Collection - S01E01 - Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.mkv
Scholastic Video Collection - S01E02 - Changes, Changes.mkv

Creates the Show and the Season underneath it, but it doesn’t show the title I put in the filename. Why? How do I fix this without going into the video in PLEX and manually editing the title for every video / episode?

Those appear to be documented as movies in the movie database (e.g. https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/315116-chicka-chicka-boom-boom). You could either add them to an existing movie library or create a new one called „Storybook Classics“. If you add them to an existing library it’ll make sense to group them with a collection tag such as „Scholastic: Treasury of 100 Storybooks“ for better organization.

If you want to keep them in a tv show library, your best shot is to use the personal tv shows agent and go with embedded metadata (sort of as your metadata source).

thetvdb has this series too.

Though, you will have to organize them as thetvdb does,…

Changes, Changes is listed as episode 8 from season 2
https://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=334171&seasonid=727358&id=6287822

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is episode 1 from season 3

In that case… go with that show! It’s a one-time effort to apply your files to the TVDB structure (use „show all“ to minimize jumping back and forth between seasons). The Movie Database might provide better matches with more details for some of the videos but there’s a chance they don’t know all of them (good luck checking this for 100 items) and posters might turn out quite heterogeneous.

Thanks for all the comments. Would rather keep it in the the tv library type I made since I am not happy with how collections work yet (doesn’t obey library collection settings on Apple TV).

Why put the episode name in the filename if it doesn’t use it?

The tv dB entry doesn’t have anywhere near the 100 videos in the collection. I tried to make a new entry in tv dB that is exactly what I have in the 16 DVD’s all 100 videos but someone deleted it in 2 hours after I added 2 seasons.

If I add the title to the files metadata how do I get it to show up in plex? I have the library agent sent to the tv dB one with the personal media first. Do I have to change it to personal media agent. When I tried to change the meta data in one file and rescanned and refreshed in plex it didn’t work. Thoughts on what I need to do to get the metadata to work? Since there is no database source that has all videos …

This is for you, not PLEX.

I would goto the forum to find out why.

It may just be a case where you have to wait for the edits to be approved.

This is tricky…BUT not impossible.
Take a look here how…

Well thanks for being nicer than me than the people where to the guy in that thread holy cow! Lol

So basically I should be able to add the title of the video into the files metadata and then set the agent of the library to personal media agent. I will give that a try tonight. Right now I have in the same library I made for the Pixar short films that I had matched to an entry in tvdb. Will changing the agent to personal media remove the matched data for that?

Second option I could add the data manually to plex. But, it would probably be better to put the data in the files.

Yea I was a little disappointed that someone decided to delete my unfinished tvdb entry without even emailing me. Oh well I guess they didn’t want me to contribute for others to use my entry …

The folks at the TVDB are pretty strict on what they feel should be the proper naming for shows. For instance, they view the NBC show Will & Grace (2017) to be the same series as the original 1998 series because it is the same actors. So on TheTVDB you have one series with the new shows that are airing as Season 1 for the 2017 series are recorded as Season 9 for the 1998 series. If anyone tries to add a new 2017 series they delete it. No response to any of my messages to an admin on the site either.

Yep… They view it as a continuation of the series, not a new series.
Same goes with The X-Files (1993)/(2016) and Twin Peaks (1990)/(2017).
What pisses me off is the series Ancient Aliens (2010). It goes from season 08 to season 11, skipping seasons 09 and 10

Absolutely. This is best for your situation. That way if anything goes wrong and you have to rebuild PMS.
The metadata is there. Just setup the server with Personal Media as your agent and PLEX will load it all back. This is far better than editing 100+ entries then it’s all gone and you would have to do it all over.

Do you know of a good program that I can use to change the title in the metdata of MKV files?

Is there a metadata field that PLEX would pull in the Summary from?

I’m not sure PLEX will use the metadata in a MKV file. I think MP4 is the only supported file type that plex will read and use.

When I use mp3tag to look at a file where this info has been inserted, I can find the summary in the field ‘PODCASTDESC’ (no joke).

There is even a tag for the actors, but it appears that you need to insert a whole XML file into it.
Its name ITUNMOVI suggests that it might be possible to set it from iTunes.
Here is what it looks like:

I use MKVToolNix it is quite simple to use. https://mkvtoolnix.download/

Though as noted above the local media info support is poor outside of mp3 and mp4, you would probably need to edit the local assets plugin to get it to do what you need.

Windows Explorer can edit the title and summary(MP4 format). You can also add cast members and stuff…
But I’m not sure how any of this applies to a television series. I’ve only had luck with movies.
Something similar to this.

@rlewandowski23,
Nice work on thetvdb!!

One thing though, do you think the Spanish editions would be better suited as a special to the series? While I know you are the one adding and creating the entries, I just wonder if those few came much later in the series. I only say this cause it will leave gaps where non-Spanish users would opt-out wanting them leaving the series looking kinda incomplete. Thetvdb is very an*l about “air dates”.
Anyway, great job!

Well it’s more of DVD collection of videos of scholastic books. I got guff from TVDB folks (original uncompleted entry was deleted) and got the vibe they might delete my new one, but perhaps they will leave it since it’s done (https://forums.thetvdb.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=45174). Not sure why they are resistent to DVD video collections like this since they work best on PLEX as TV Shows. At least until PLEX Collections works better. Can you have Season specials on TV shows? Thought it was Series specials not season specific specials. Would be nice if you could have season specific specials. I have the first 4 seasons of The Big Bang Theory where I tried to do season specific specials / extras, but you can’t do that like you can for Movies. I complained about this over a year ago here - https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/196894/tv-shows-local-extras#latest.

I honestly organized the videos on the season / dvd in whatever order they were alphabetically except I positioned the primary video (name of the DVD) first and put the Spanish versions next to each other so that when watching I could easily have my kids watch them back to back … English first then Spanish.

Now I just have to figure out how I’m missing videos. The collection says 100 videos, but I came out with 98 and that’s with the extras of getting to know the authors. The completionist in me will have me re-opening all the dvds with makeMKV with a really low length requirement to see if I missed anything! lol

Yes and no. While it’s true you can not add a special episode in with a regular season you can however add them to the specials season and include the “air before” date.

As you can see the special is included in season 08 but it’s not part of the season number count. Nor will PLEX count as part of season 08. This episode will be part of the specials.

This request is very old and PLEX has made improvements on extras. Maybe there is something new in PLEX that will allow you to do this. Not sure though… I know you have a better chance at PLEX making the change vs thetvdb forum. They are very strict about this type of added content and that series is locked(seasons 01~05 & specials) by the moderators .
