A little background…
I have been on 6.2.1 on my ATV2 for a few years now using PlexConnect / OpenPlex with excellent results.
Up until a few months ago…It started to freeze up while watching a movie, Tv Show and the only way was to hold both buttons on the remote and RESTART. Of course all updates are installed, all fixes from git. It happens totally randomly. I reinstalled factory firmware (6.2.1) 3 times with no change to the freezing.
I did some research and found this, looks like I am not alone:

Looks like the ATV2 is abandoned…and yes it’s old tech…I know…
Last week JB my ATV2 back to 5.3 and used wahlman.j link to install PlexConnect:

apt-get -y install git; rm -R /Applications/iosjailbreak; cd /Applications; git clone git://github.com/wahlmanj/iosjailbreak.git; cd /Applications/iosjailbreak; ./installatv.bash

I am reporting that it is working perfectly, no instability or mysterious reboots.
I’m sure the amount of ATV2’s still operational is dwindling, easily replaced with ATV4,Roku, Chromcast, Android TV Box etc…but if this can give new hope to someone out there, even better.

This is the reason I personally started using PlexConnect to begin with. Everything else just ran terrible streaming files on the aTV2 besides Plex/PlexConnect. Constant reboots etc. The aTV3 isn’t much better for me in terms of rebooting when using heavier themes or enabling certain options with my own theme so I run smaller posters just to prevent reboots. It’s a shame they couldn’t make the devices better but now that the aTV4 is out it is a stable client from what I can tell in the aTV family compared to the aTV2/3. The problem is the older devices run out of memory and reboot so the less strain & memory used the better which is why PlexConnect with the lower the theme settings used the less frequently you will see reboots, lock ups etc.
