On the tvdb the episode is listen as a single episode, but on the dvd it is two episodes. How would I go about this?
You can either merge the two episodes from the DVD into one file or name them so the server see’s them as a single episode (As Part A and Part B)
I personally prefer merging them into a single file as it is the cleanest approach, but if you want to keep the files separate you would name them how you see the episode on theTBDB and add the part identifier on the end as shown here for stacked episodes.
/TV Shows
/Heroes
/Season 01
Heroes - s01e01 - pt1.avi <- This would be your first episode from the DVD
Heroes - s01e01 - pt2.avi <- This would be your second episode from the DVD
I actually tried that. Plex is still only showing one episode.
EDIT: I’m guessing that is intentional then, as when the first part finished the second part started playing. There wasn’t a way to switch between the two parts though, is that intended?
That is exactly correct, when you tell it that it is a stacked episode Plex treats it as a single episode.
With the online metadata source showing both episodes as a single episode there isn’t a whole lot to do. I say this because you can’t just add an episode in between. However, other options would be to add the episode as an episode number in the season that isn’t already taken or add it as a special. In either case you would have trouble getting it to fall where it would need to be.
I guess I figured it would do something along the lines of “When I choose the episode, it has a drop down for ‘part’ much like it does for audio and subtitles”. I may just combine them into one file since that’s not the case.
There is a slightly similar function (And I actually dislike recommending this), but you could add the files as different versions of the episode.
It will vary by client how it is handled, some will popup asking which version to play. (And this is the reason I don’t recommend this function) But the popup will only have information regarding the resolution and audio codec. It doesn’t actually have a way to show you which item connects to which file so it’s kind of hit or miss on which one you get. (It will be consistent, but you’ll have to remember yourself which is which).
The difference in your library is that parta/partb will show up as a single episode while multiple versions will give you a 2 in a blue circle in the corner of the item indicating there are two versions of that episode. This support article talks about it for movies and it is very similar for TV Shows.
I just split the double episodes by first finding the end/start point between the two episodes in VLC. Then I use MKVToolNIX to split them to that point, obviously this is for MKV files but most episodes are now.
Just google split episodes with said software.

That’s backwards. He has two files but the metadata source has them listed as a single episode. Although the same software should actually be able to join the files just as easily.
