I have two homes - one for winter one for summer.
Presently I drag a laptop back and forth that runs the Plex server.
What I’d like to do is just have a laptop at each location and when I go from north to south just update the files on the south laptop so that everything is the same as the north laptop. Likewise when we go back north repeat so the north laptop is up to date.
Is that doable?
I realize that certain files, folders, etc would need to be recreated / update but with Google Remote that parts seems easy to do.
Thanks for the reply - just to be clear - when you say “You can add the files to a server however you wish - a portable drive, upload / download …” you’re referring to media files - correct?
I have all my media on WD UBS drives and take them back and forth,
What I’m looking for - and maybe that’s what you’re saying here "Turn on Sync Watch Status in Settings → Account, and Plex Media Server will sync watch status from both servers with plex.tv. is that when I go back north and turn on my Plex server there that everything will look the same as when I turned off my South server - i.e. I will see that I still have 3 episodes left of the TV series I’m watching and I’ll see that a movie I started watching and then paused is still waiting to restart.
Both servers will be on your account. Other than that, they are independent of each other. They do not have to have exactly the same content. What is on each server is up to you.
When you add content to either server it will go through the normal process of downloading metadata, generating thumbnails, etc. Any custom posters or other metadata configured on one server will not be reflected on the other. Plex has no mechanism for synchronizing that information.
Watched / Unwatched status is synced. It is synced shortly after you finish watching a movie or TV show episode (within a few minutes). It is also synced when the Plex Media Server is restarted.
Partially watched / In Progress status is not synced. This is for privacy reasons. See the green Tip! box in the support document for details.
There are a few other restrictions, such as status for Other Videos and Music is not synced. See the support document for details.
Hi BanzaiInstitute,
Yours would be an excellent solution if I trusted my Plex server to stay running all the time. As it is it shuts itself off one or twice a week.

I’m honestly not trying to add new complications to your situation… But having a reliable server is possible. If solving that problem sounded like fun then you could solve all your problems.
If you are carrying the server around with you it seems like you may as well just run Kodi or some other player, instead of using Plex. Do you actually need the things that Plex does? Maybe you do, I’m just asking.
I think my present method may have to continue - a Dell XPS 13 as the server - it does the job and doesn’t weigh much - easy enough to take back and forth. I was just hoping a way to, essentially, “clone” the information at one end - install on the other end. Repeat when heading the other direction again.
I do like the Plex interface very much and will stick with it. What I don’t like is they seem to keep adding more and more stuff that I don’t want.
I did download the Kodi app and will have a look at it too.
