ubuntu 16.04 permissions shinanigans

fyi i use the disks software, it edit the fstab file through an interface. nevertheless I’ve changed it to go by UUID and I’m unsure if i need to reboot something, but i remounted the disk anyway. no luck. same issues and same weirdness

I also tried the /dev/sdxx way. still no bite, same story.

Please understand, I’m trying to help you do this quickly, easily, and get rid of all future issues.
If you wish to continue to try and do it your way, that’s fine but know that I have the procedure all worked out and it’s worked for everyone.
If you continue your current path, there is no knowing when you’ll resolve the problem. If you do it my way, you’ll resolve it when you complete the procedure and finish scanning the libraries. If you continue your way, I won’t be able to help you.

dude, big props to you man, I can’t be thankful enough. I know that I can fix this by moving my library to a propper place that isn’t retarded. unfortunately I’ve set up quite a few programs/scripts to access/read stuff from this dir, so it’s not as easy as just changing the mount point but I will do it some day. I was just really surprised by this weird phenomenon. I mean if i have 777 on my home folder or 770 shouldn’t make a difference since plex is part of my group. but somehow it does… i’ll set it at 777 which works until I move the mountpoint to a propper place

anyway thanks for the big help. this entire plex project have been incredibly educational and ppl like you that helps me hammering my head against the wall until it breaks instead of giving up after the first try.

ty, and gn

aright, good news. now it works… you were right, modifying the fstab from using by-path to using UUID=XXX… made it work, when i tried it earlier it had the entirely wrong mount point since the disks software change the mount point if you change the identification.

How about a clever transitional hack ?

  1. move the mount points as intended and get that part done. Make PMS happy
  2. Create the two needed symlinks from the old location in your home directory to the new location. It will be transparent to your scripts.
