UBUNTU 20.x PMS 1.28.2.6106

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6106
Player Version#:
Since i upgraded to 1.28.2.6106, PMS no longer sees my library files on /media/john/ which is a 3 TB hard disk. In the version I had before, PMS had no problem seeing this device.
To diagnose, I did this
created a new library called TV and pointed it at my old setup in /media/john/3TSEA/VBLIB/Media/Television
The SCAN LIBRARY FILES does nothing - this shows as EMPTY in the web gui
Also, the add library utility does not see this directory, it sees /media/john/3TSEA but nothing below it, I had to manually add the full path.

But, on /home/john/Videos, the add library utility see it, and creates a library which is accessible.

I have changed owner to plex:plex (from john:john) on this drive and chmod to 775 for all files on /media/john/3TSEA/VBLIB/Media:
drwxrwxr-x 5 plex plex 4096 Jan 6 2020 ‘Home Movies’
drwxrwxr-x 463 plex plex 24576 Mar 12 21:06 Movies
drwxrwxr-x 2 plex plex 4096 Feb 18 2017 Photos
drwxrwxr-x 101 plex plex 4096 Aug 20 18:16 Television

the plex user is:.
(plex:x:123:129::/var/lib/plexmediaserver:/bin/bash)

What’s new in 1.28 that is not seeing this drive?

My music is located on /home/john and migrated fine, no media on /media/john/3TSEA made the upgrade.

The problem you are having with /media is not related to PMS.

It IS related to Gnome and the Gnome automounter (which puts everything it can grab into /media)

The problem with this:

  1. You plug in something – It shows up in /media
  2. Easy for you
  3. Secretly, Gnome has set EXCLUSIVE access to your username.
  4. Plex is another user and Linux rules prohibit another user from seeing your files unless you grant it.
  5. In this case, Gnome won’t let you override the permissions.

There is only one way to combat this: (I wrote this 4 years ago… lol)

I will examine your tip sheet further but I am still wondering why this occurred after the upgrade. This PLEX instance has been trouble free for over 2 years, then I get updated.

One thing to note is that gnome was in the SNAP updates listing along with PMS and I don’t know when that was updated last. So, if GNOME was updated without my knowing it, it might explain what happened.

I removed SNAP as I know nothing about it and don’t want to be chasing things like this. I will give your plan a try.

Thx

That worked - I followed along and it worked well - thank you for the tips!

John

Glad you resolved it.

Gnome is VERY sneaky. It has been that way since Gnome 3.0 was introduced.
