Unable to access server on the same network (PMS on Laptop, Client on PS4)

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1913-e5cc93306
Player Version#: 4.9.0

Hi guys,
I have my PMS setup and running on my laptop and I’m trying to connect my PS4 with this all being on the same network (Wi-Fi and not wired). However, it’s saying it’s unable to connect to my PC “This server is offline or unreachable” and as far as I can tell I shouldn’t need to play around with my router to get this all working if it’s all under the same network (or maybe I’m wrong). I’ve found various past topics but nothing has worked so far, hoping I’ve missed something and can get this working soon.

Things I’ve remembered and tried doing was manually entering the server IP to connect to on my PS4 (just my local IP) and then I’ve also disabled secure connections but neither seemed to have worked as far as I can tell.

Today I tried downloading the mobile app and connecting through that. It can detect my media server but after I hit continue it just sits on ‘Loading sources…’ and nothing happens even letting it sit there for a couple of minutes. Still all through the same network.

I spent a bit of time searching the forums for something to suggest, as I don’t have your equipment. I found a lot of people struggling who didn’t write back.

But you reminded me just now that we should be able to get some Log Files if we try, and the fact you’re having more problems suggests it’s something deeper but solvable.

Would you confirm for us that you can use a browser on the laptop that’s running PMS to open the server at https://127.0.0.1:32400/web and that you can watch a video like that.

We’ll move on to other devices once we confirm a few things.
Thanks!

Thank you I appreciate you helping me out.

I can access http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html on my laptop where my PMS is running and yes my movies do start if I play them through there.

Nice. So let’s enable debug logging.

Then power cycle the laptop, log into Windows and give Plex Media Server about 6-10min to initialize. It will make for good clean logs. Then do a test for us:

  • Power cycle the PS4 and try to connect to your Plex server.
  • When you get the “offline of unreachable error” screenshot it (phone or w/e)
  • Give it 30sec or so for PMS to finish logging the event.
  • Use the laptop and go into https://127.0.0.1:32400/web
  • Download your logs, zip up what it gives you, and attach it with your reply.

Logs

This forum article has some tips. We only need the log files that were changed at or after the time of the reboot you did.

Thank you.

Here are the logs, I cleared out my logs, restarted both Laptop and PS4, let my Laptop sit for 6ish minutes before going into my PS4 and opening Plex. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-12_02-57-47.zip (46.0 KB)

Thanks I’ll have a look now.

With connection issues, it’s very common to suggest the user disable IPv6 in the Plex Settings - Show Advanced - Network

IPV6

and

Changes

Reboot the laptop after that. Though it’s not 100% clear that’s your issue, let’s start there. Repeat the tests. If it doesn’t connect again, download fresh logs. Thanks.

Just in case it’s any help, both my Laptop and PS4 all have the same

  • Primary DNS
  • Default Gateway
  • Subnet Mask

Inside Plex

  • Enable local network discovery (GDM) (Checked)
  • Preferred network interface (Any)
  • Secure connections (Disabled)
  • Enable server support for IPv6 (Unchecked)

Okay I’ll look at the new logs.

Let’s also have you try to set Secured connections - Preferred and test again.

You want to connect to your server on the laptop with https now. Make sure the laptop connection over secured works. Let us know what you try and what you see.

What is this IP address?

Can we see the output of ipconfig /all

Still unable to connect when setting Secure Connections back to Preferred.

I’m sorry but your Nord VPN puts this beyond my abilities.
Anyone have a walkthrough?

I figured when it says ‘Media disconnected’ it isn’t running at all and wouldn’t affect anything. NordVPN is installed on my laptop but has never been actively turned on during any of these tests or running in the background. The VPN has never been running during any of these tests. I can uninstall this if you want this completely off my laptop to test if you want to go that route.

This is what it will show when it’s running (IP’s relate to the VPN so no harm showing)

When there’s network issues, and it talks frequently about not being able to find a gateway, and it doesn’t list 127.0.0.1 as a valid loopback, it makes me think that deep down, a VPN or other security feature is getting involved.

I see, if you are all out of ideas I appreciate the help you’ve given so far.

You’re welcome. The website articles suggest uninstalling VPNs and rebooting.
It’s worth trying. Windows is difficult with all its variables, and as I don’t run it anymore, most of my suggestions involve returning toward a clean windows install with patches. Let us know how you proceed.

This is crazy, I went ahead and uninstalled NordVPN as well as any software related to VPN usage, uninstalled both Plex app and Plex Media server, as well as the Plex app on my PS4 and reinstalled everything as well as disabling my firewall. It’s now magically working and I’m annoyed only because I obviously changed so many things so I can’t say what the fix was, but I will just assume maybe the VPN stuff really did have something to do with it. I cannot thank you enough with all this and your paitence with me, you’ve been a lifesaver. Really appreciate the free help you give on here dude.

I eventually reenabled my firewall and it’s still working, still seems like either NordVPN or TAP services were the cause of this issue even if they weren’t in use for some reason. Again thank you so much.

Now that we’re done I get to ask, is Mrpancakers your cat? :cat:

Hahah oh I wish but we live in a complex that doesn’t allow pets, just a username that has really stuck for a long time and used for anything not so serious in my online life.
