Unable to move PMS data storage location?

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5798

Hey All,

My setup is:

  • Nvidia Shield
  • DS418
  • Bunch of separate Android and Roku TV clients

So on the Shield, a while back I was getting storage warnings on the Shield and I saw a suggestion to move the PMS data storage location to the NAS. My understanding is that is where the cached / working files the server uses for transcoding, etc live.

Problem is, even after updates, etc I have never seen the option to move to network storage. When I try to move the location I only get two options:

  • Internal (system storage location)
  • Internal (user accessible storage location)

Is this even an option or is there something I am missing here? I don’t have any issues with Plex server accessing the media on my NAS.

You cannot move the Plex Data Folder to a network location.

Even if permitted, it would not be a good idea.

The increased latency of the read/write operations across the LAN would cause problems. Also, it would double your LAN traffic as Plex performed read/write operations for the temp files used when transcoding.

There would be database concerns as well. If connectivity was lost while Plex was running, it could result in database corruption.

I recommand you to buy an enclosure and an ssd.

A life time of an ssd if far better than a usb stick and I know plex has some problem with usb stick.

Yeah, before I had my NAS setup I had media on the attached SSD but I found the shield to be inconsistent in terms of staying connected to the SSD but it sounds like my only option.

I have 9GB data size for the PMS when I look at app details and I don’t know if there is a way to decrease that size (seems very large for that kind of metadata) as I cleared cache but blowing away data will remove all the account, etc info. Maybe 9GB is normal?

In Shield system settings, try configuring USB port to be always on, and USB and processor for max performance.

The size of the Plex data folder will increase with the amount of media. You can decrease the space required by disabling video preview thumbnail generation and deleting any current thumbnails.

See Why is my Plex Media Server directory so large?.

As a reference point, I’ve PMS running on my DS918+, with roughly 1200 movies and 1200 TV episodes. The Plex data folder is ~50 GB. The database is under 100 MB. The remainder is mostly thumbnails for video preview, chapter markers, etc.

Yeah, trying to migrate my install location to SSD over usb but its taking a while - not sure how long is reasonable or if I need to stop the server I guess before doing that but I would expected it to warn me about it if needed.
