Unable to play videos since upgrade to Version 0.9.16.0

Some videos won’t start at all, others will start, play for approx 10 seconds then give an error that they can no longer be played. I then open the same file in VLC and it plays perfectly

What is the exact error? what plex player app are you trying to play them in? have you looked at the server log or player app log at covering the time which it stopped? do you know if it is transcoding or not during that 10 seconds?

same problem here since the last update. cant airplay anymore keep disconecting

“There was a problem playing this item” I run Plex Server on my PC and I’m watching the videos using chrome on the same PC, since its local I don’t believe its transcoding but I’m not sure. I didn’t know there were logs, I’ll try finding them and check if anything useful is there

Most likely transcoding if you’re using the Plex Web player. It hasn’t got that much of codec support so I’d be surprised if you have media suited for it, without making a conscious effort to get it. Upload the logs as per BigWheels instruction (there’s a link in his sign) and I’m sure he’ll find out what’s going on. Until then, you’re free to install PMP or such that doesn’t require transcoding (since it’s quite harsh comparing Plex Web and VLC).

@BigWheel - There were about 5 log files per component, I attached them all. Let me know if there is anything else I can try.
@Peter_W - What did you mean by install PMP? I googled it and only saw stuff for a password manager.

I did more testing and it seems that stuff I watched long ago is still working, so maybe its just the specific videos I’m playing that are having issues. It would make sense to me that codec is the problem except why would it be able to play a few seconds/minutes then die out?
Would a codec pack help or would Plex not use the pack?

@lukebrehm - you claimed that since you were using a local browser (Chrome) to play the video in question, it wasn’t transcoding. I just tried to explain in a somewhat lacking effort that it most likely was transcoding since the Plex Web player (that you use in a browser) is the least competent player out of all Plex clients. Comparing that client to VLC is like comparing a bicycle with no chain to a Ferrari. It’s just not that cool to do at all. Hence me suggesting that you try a different client that you can install on your PC and use locally. Plex has several other such as Plex Media Player (PMP), Plex Home Theater (PHT, today renamed to OpenPHT) and also the Windows Mobile app that you can locate in your Windows app store (I’d suggest only using that in specific scenarios such as syncing, since it’s the only PC client that has that ability).

Hopefully the error with playing files in the browser using Plex Web will be sorted out now that you have provided logs though.
