Can't play ANY video file all the sudden

Server Version#: 1.17.0.1709
Player Version#: All

So a few days ago I updated my plex server and all the sudden plex stopped playing pretty much any of my videos. I’ve spent the last couple days trying to fix the issue that arose out the blue. I even replaced the entire computer with a brand new freshly setup one that the server was on. Same issue.

Videos will either
a.) play for a few seconds and then just shut down with no error.
b.) play for a few seconds then freeze with the counter still moving.
c.) not load at all.

Is there an issue with the new plex update that is causing this? I have a pretty decent Intel i3 based system that has been running perfect for 6 months. Even got me to upgrade to the Plex pass to support the project. Now it’s useless to me. :’(

Here is the logs for the server. As I said, I did a fresh brand new computer install today and that should show it all. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am having a similar issue, however I have been able to narrow it down to being only in the web player (Latest version of Chrome) and the files are Standard Def AVI Files (Video Codec: MPEG4). These files do play just fine on the Android Plex app and XBox App. Before you ask I have also tested this on Edge and the same issue occurs.

Edit: The only thing that happens when I have this issue is the load icon just spins and nothing happens. The Dashboard shows that the video is playing. As in when I click on show details of the video that’s playing in the Dashboard I see the counter ticking off like it’s playing.

Exactly, I think you hit the nail on the head with this being a Web Player issue. I am having the issues with Roku, Chrome and Edge. What you describe is the main symptom. I assume Plex is in charge of the player? I wonder when it will be fixed. I hope soon. I am just surprised I am not seeing the front page just spammed with this issue. :’(

your log is full of errors with the transcoder

i would guess your errors are because of the new transcoder in the 1.17.0.1709 release if it was working fine previous to 2-3 days ago when that version was released

was it 100% fine before you instaled the latest PMS 1.17.0.1709 a day or 2 ago?

hopefully you can get someone from plex’s attention. if your using hardware transcoding i would make sure you have the latest version video driver installed etc

No I don’t use hardware transcoding and yea, it worked perfectly for a long time. I can’t get the new plex to work properly on any of the Windows 10 computer’s I have tried it on. I will verify I have the most updated drivers for all hardware though.

I borrowed my friends FiresStick and it indeed works perfectly fine. No issues what so ever. Soapbox is right, it is an issue with the transcoding to the media server for Windows (Chrome, Edge, etc.) and Roku.

ive been having issues as well as i have 90+ uploaded movies and even pay for the monthly pass and now its not loading anything and telling me connection error…ive even uninstalled and reinstalled plex and STILL getting the same issues and finding it not worth paying for the monthly access pass if im not able to even use it

Yea. I’ve had Plex Pass for over a year. I canceled it this morning until I am able to actually use the service again. :’(

I’m having this issue with all my TV show libraries. Roku, Web Player and even the Media player will just freeze at start. All my movies, extras and featurettes start right up. As soon as I updated the server yesterday I cant play my tv show library. I hope this is being looked at!!!

i canceled my subscription as its not working…no point in paying for something im unable to use…MAYBE when they fix it i may renew it…but until then…not paying for it

you should start your own thread - that is not the same issue as the OP

update for me. I downgraded back to the previous PMS version and all is well. I told plex to skip this upgrade for now. I narrowed mine down to Roku and plex app on the pc with the server. The web UI worked. Hope this helps!! I don’t use any mobile apps to test.

I wish that had worked for me. I’ve rolled back to the previous install but it ended up giving me the same issues still. even on a brand new system. I’ve tried 3 computers including a freshly formatted one with windows freshly installed. Sad… I never had a single issue for a few years until a couple weeks ago. I cancled my plex pass and shut my server down until something is remedied. I don’t know what the issue is. I just know it’s a transcoding issue. Glad yours is working man!

I solved it by first disabling the plex server on Synology, then reenable it.
