Understanding Empty Trash Automatically After Each Scan

Hello!

I’m having terrible trouble with my Plex movie library and I’m desperately trying to locate the source of the problem. I’ve now lost all my tweaks and edits on the entire library at least 6 times and, to be honest, I’m more than tired of it.

I noticed that one of my hard drives had an issue and couldn’t be found for a short while. When it was visible again, it appears that everything on that drive was added again from scratch (meaning that I lost all my data and tweaks, yet again sigh). I started digging and noticed the "automatically empty trash after each scan " option was checked. I thought that was the recommended setting from past research but now I’m equally wondering if it’s the source of my problem. Would this cause the library to delete everything that became “unavailable” for a time and then have to re-add it from scratch when it became available again? I’m curious if this is what could have been happening in the background without my knowledge causing the loss of all my setting and tweaks. If so and I turn it off, what would be the protocol for emptying out the trash manually (meaning when would I want to do that)? I would assume after any library changes like adding a new version of an existing movie or something like that so that the old version would be appropriately removed? Are there other times that I should know about? If I need to go this route I just want to be sure I know what I need to do manually so I don’t screw things up or end up with other frustrations.

Thanks so much!

If your disks are wonky, switch that option off.
If you are using external disks, switch that option off.
If your media are stored on a networked drive, switch that option off.

Leaving it on will produce exactly the issues you are experiencing. (OK not necessarily, but the probability is high under these circumstances.)
