(UPDATED with VIDEOS) December Plex Pass Community Roundtables

I want to know where my API documentation is, which was promised when Plex turned v1.0.

…where the device ie. Passport can sync content from the top tier and share it with other clients

Yep, that would be nice. I also own a Passport Pro and this has crossed my mind several times.

I’d like to raise the issue of the general direction Plex products have been taking, which is to rely more and more on online services being available. At the beginning, Plex was fairly simple: you host your server, you watch your media. But with stuff like Plex Home, everything is not nicely “contained” inside your home anymore (ironically). When my internet connection goes down for some reason, I’m often locked out of my own Plex server because it can’t authenticate me. I know it’s supposed to remember my auth token so that I should only be locked out if I try to switch users, but I can guarantee it’s not working as expected. And with my Passport Pro, which I use when I travel, it’s even more of a problem because I can be without internet for several days. I have since then learned to edit the Plex Server configuration by hand to disable Plex Home when this happens (which I had to do a handful of times now). The point here is not to discuss specifics, but to discuss the overall trend of Plex turning into an online services paltform, and not necessarily keeping in mind all those “offline” scenarios, whether they’re situational (e.g. I’m in a cabin in the woods) or philosophical (e.g. I don’t want my NAS to be online). So basically, is Plex still committed to products that work offline? What will be done going forward to ensure that new online features don’t break those “offline” scenarios? And are “offline” users going to miss out on a growing number of features, or will online features stay minimal?

Thanks!

These are great questions for the roundtable. Thanks for suggesting them!

I have a few questions that i havent found answers on; mostly feature-future related though.

  • I use the PVR Beta + bought a Silicondust HDHomeRun Extend (fka. HDHR4DC) and i like it! Could PVR allow me to record a timespan - on a channel that lacks EPG?
  • I would like to hear what i can do to let users find “Goldfinger” when they search for “James Bond”. Collections dont seem to be included in search results: https://goo.gl/pL1tJr
  • I would like to check some photos / homevideos on my phone, and use the share button to Plex Photo so it can upload these.
  • Is there an intention to allow the Plex Server to tag my images offline? (so i can enable the future but it wont upload thumbnails to a 3th party)
  • Will the PVR feature be able to use EPG IDs sent by the channel, and will we be able to enable/disable this per channel? Some send bad data, like some presuplied EPG is always off.

I know I won’t be able to attend, but will definitely watch after it is recorded and linked.

Mainly want to hear on some of the plans in regards to Cloud Sync once Plex Cloud is out of beta. Plex Cloud seems that it would end up replacing Cloud Sync as it pretty much is Cloud Sync 2.0, which isn’t a bad thing in the slightest.

I would like the Roundtable to include some representatives from the entities that PLEX relies on to deliver it’s various platforms. I know that Microsoft has people that act as contacts for the issues that arise in there universal app platform. It’s their job to make sure that the issues that arise due to ecosystem incompatibilities and whatever are reported to the DEVs in their pond. I’m guessing there are people from Mac and various Linux distros who act in that capacity as well. Wouldn’t it be a more productive Roundtable if those representatives could pass along the some of the needs/wants of the plex community so that future plans aren’t always waiting for one ecosystem or another to get their stuff together. I think if one leader from each of the PLEX branches reached out to one of the contacts they have within their respective ecosystem and invited that rep to join in the roundtable with the simple purpose of passing word along to the DEVs in their pond. Then we all would benefit from that discussion.

I would love top hear that discussion, but that will likely never happen. Too many non disclosure agreements at play.

@KarlDag Yes, but I think that’s the biggest issue with the walled garden ecosystems. The gardens are becoming mazes with little or no glimpses of the garden next door. I suggested this because I think the plex community is a large enough group to have a voice with the entities that are proudly locking away access to anything but their proprietary versions of common standards. This has been a lauded business practice for years now and it takes a community to incite any real pressure to correct it. So if you think there is some other organization with more sway that we can all rally behind then by all means make that known and I’ll get that party started. For now though I don’t know of a more diverse community (in terms of technologies being utilized under a common platform) than Plex. So IF these roundtables are going to succeed in the goal established at the onset, then it only makes sense to include the “most likely suspects”. That is to say the entities that will be most likely to not want a new passage through their beautiful garden wall. Then as a community we have a chance perhaps of getting enough pressure on the unyielding to allow for the plex developers to implement something platform wide instead of one special snowflake at a time.

I would like to have a discussion about Feature Requests that aren’t moving forward. We KNOW what we want to see in this suite. And yet, instead we get broken things like Plex Cloud. Or hardware with embedded PMS which is severely lobotomized in features or upgradeability.

Collections, Per User Server side Speed Limits, Black Listing for permissions, filters, tags, etc. The list goes on. Development time spent on Cloud or Netgear’s router could easily have been spent on these features that USERS have been begging to get for years.

It’s time to stop adding fringe devices and features and finalize the core of PMS, IMO.

^^ THIS! It needs to be discussed, and with no long winded answers. Just need the fact’s and hopefully some answers.

Go read. Elan answered, nothing more needs to be said I think.

I already did and wouldn’t have posted this unless it was needed. This, “go with the flow”, “it is what it is” mentality is why consumer rights have gone to the crapper. Thanks so much for your concern though. Appreciate it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Just a heads up, registration is open through Tueday, December 6, end of day PST.

I’d like to have a discussion about the Plex Dance. I started a discussion a few weeks ago which got some surprising reactions from people who think there’s nothing wrong with a feature that doesn’t do what users expect or what the documentation says it does.

One Plex employee said that Plex does not consider it a bug, although Plex employees in the past have said otherwise.

Also my topic.

I have 3 feature requests:

  • Fill the UPNP “Presentation URL” to reach Server web pages with a simple clic in network browser
  • Possibility to assign permanently a remote player (Plex or ChromeCast) to use tablet as a dedicated remote control for TV
  • Server for OpenWrt as it is the only always on box at home
    Thanks

We’ve discussed that possibility a few times. No timeframe for it yet, but it’s a fairly common feature for DVRs…

  • I would like to hear what i can do to let users find “Goldfinger” when they search for “James Bond”. Collections dont seem to be included in search results:

Ah, interesting one. I’ll note it in the collections issue we have internally.

  • Is there an intention to allow the Plex Server to tag my images offline? (so i can enable the future but it wont upload thumbnails to a 3th party)

No, sorry, that’s not possible with the technology we’ve licensed.

  • Will the PVR feature be able to use EPG IDs sent by the channel, and will we be able to enable/disable this per channel? Some send bad data, like some presuplied EPG is always off.

We don’t have any current plans to take EPG data sent over-the-air, at least at this point, mostly because we haven’t wrapped our heads about where this would be helpful

I think there needs to be some discussion about where the DVR stands. I know you wont talk release times, but the glaring lack of communication and updates is starting to look/feel like abandonware. From what I have gathered, its on a 3rd party to take the next steps, but some/any communication is really needed. Specially because you had a big blog post announcing the feature!

I would love nothing more than to have it merged into the official release channels and cannot install it until that is completed :frowning:

Also, photo facial recognition is important to me. While I love puppies, object recognition is cool but is an external hosted service and doesn’t assist me finding fluffy! any further discussion on this would be cool.

Should I be expecting a confirmation email or something if I’ve been accepted for the session?

I’ll be sending confirmation emails out tomorrow along with info on how to join the sessions.

Okay, thanks.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this thread and thanks to @elan for sharing some background info on some feature requests. Based on the feedback we’ve received, we’ll focus on big picture, direction, major products and features rather than individual feature suggestions or topics otherwise better suited for the forums. I will post the agenda here soon.
