Upgrading from Emby, Need Advice

Greetings all!

I’m a new user of Plex. Some years ago (over 10) I was a supporting team member for a project called MediaBrowser. It eventually went on to MB3 before eventually naming itself Emby (hint, MB). Anyway, I’ve been using it for years and have developed quite a large media server that I use with Kodi. My brother was interested in it, and wanted to do the same for his home. But, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to use Emby. His TV supported Plex, as does his Xbox, so he decided to use that. I tried to help where I could, but I never saw much interest in using it over my already working Emby setup. Now fast forward to earlier this week. I decided to take a little bit further look at Plex and it’s offerings at his house. One thing that intrigued me was that our mother, who lives in a different house, was able to connect to his server and watch stuff remotely. Emby had this feature too but I never got it to work right. I spent a lot of time trying to get configurations right. My brother, on the other hand, isn’t as intuitive as I am and through not doing much he was able to make it work. He knows that I have a much larger collection than him, and suggested I try Plex so Mom can watch some of my stuff too. So, here I am.

On the outside, the look of Plex is different than Emby. The way media is presented took some getting used to, since most everything is visible by Poster are as opposed to Banner art. A small thing though. Internally though, I’m having a bit of difficulty. I thought my media would seamlessly integrate into the Plex library format, but it’s not. It doesn’t seem to be grabbing my pre-existing artwork correctly. It appears to be getting the correct TV Show/Episode data, but the artwork is all wrong. At first, it was grabbing the Show art from the folder.jpg I had in the root /Tv Shows/ path, rather than the art in the root of each show’s folder. I decided to try to erase that file, and see if it would grab the correct art for each show after. Now I’m having it grab just some random art from whatever season it wants. I’m not sure what the problem is, but it’s a small issue. I’ve decided to just add shows manually in groups (like “all letter A” then “all letter B”, etc) than I’m correcting the show art manually. It’s working, but it’s going to take a long time for almost 300 shows. So this is my first hurdle I’d like help with.

The other thing I’m having a hard time grasping is the user bit. In order to get Plex, I needed to create a user on the website. I went with my email, easy enough. Then I downloaded the server app to my computer and installed it. Whenever I launch the interface (webpage) it prompts for my username/password (my email, that I registered with Plex’s website). Ok, that works. But now how do I add additional users? I’d like to add my Mom so she can access my server as well as my Brother’s. I’d also like to create a user for my Dad, so he can watch stuff separately from my Mom (they’re no longer married/living together). I’d also like to add my brother, as well as be able to access my brother’s server. Now, I’ve been able to access MY server by what appears to be linking my xbox and tv app’s with a code AFTER I’ve signed in with my Plex account. But this is the admin account. So if I go to my Dad’s and install the app on his TV (which is available) and then link, he’ll be in MY account. So how do I make it so that when we link, it connects to on his name on my server? Does he have to register on Plex’s website too? And what about my Mom? Since she already accesses my brother’s server, how can I create a user and link her to my server as well (or is that even possible)? Should I create another user on my own server for ME that isn’t an admin, just for watching stuff?

I know these are probably trivial issues to a veteran of the Plex system, but it’s difficult for a new guy. I think what really makes my head hurt is the fact that I’m coming at it from over a decade of Emby and just expect things to work the same way. All in all, I know I’ll eventually get it and I’ll be thrilled. I know some time in the future I will probably be adding DVR support too because my current hardware setup already has a DVR system in place. I’m excited to be a part of this growing community!

Thanks for your time in reading my topic and thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

Take a look at this Help article - and welcome to Plex!:

check out the agents order in plex parameters for tv shows

Thanks for the tips! I’ll try looking at these when I get home later today.

@beckfield I will try and figure this out, I looked at the link last night and still felt a little confused. Might be because I was tired though!

@smosse I was looking through the settings but didn’t know there was a way to change the order. I will look into this!
