Upgrading from Fire TV

Hi all,

I’ve been using a third gen Fire TV to direct play media from my desktop, mainly 1080p MKV. I have hard wired ethernet throughout my home so it works great, apart from the fact that 5.1 audio tracks only play in Stereo unless I go into the Fire TV audio settings, disable Dolby Digital Plus and enable Dolby Digital - despite passthrough to my amp which can decode pretty much any format audio being enabled.

I’m tired of switching back and forth between these settings every time I want to use the Fire TV to stream Netflix or Amazon Video, so I’m looking at buying a new streaming device that won’t have these issues with 5.1 audio.

Everyone seems to recommend the Nvidia Shield - but the 2019 model is available as the Shield TV (tube shaped device) and the Shield TV Pro. As I’m not looking to use the device as a server, do I need the Pro for the setup I have described above or will the Shield TV be ok?

Many thanks,

Guy

I suggest getting the Pro model. Based on threads I’ve seen on the forum, the tube model seems to have issues running the Plex client. Search for “Shield tube” and you’ll find them.

Great, thanks. Didn’t know it was being referred to as the Shield Tube so will have a look. Unfortunately the Pro seems to be out of stock everywhere in the UK at the moment, but I’ve set stock alerts so I hopefully shouldn’t have to wait too long!
