“use hardware acceleration when available” checkbox

I’m frustrated. Why isn’t the use hardware acceleration checkbox available on the Transcoder page? Transcoder is strictly using my CPU and I don’t see how to get it to use the graphic card instead. Thanks.

Server Version#: 1.14.0.5470
Graphic Card: GeForce GTX 980
Windows 10 64-bit

From support article Using Hardware-Accelerated Streaming:

Tip! : Hardware-accelerated streaming is a premium feature and requires an active Plex Pass subscription.

If you do have a Plex Pass but cannot see the option, you might need to click Show Advanced (as this is an advanced setting).

That explains it. Thanks!

A Plex Pass is $4.99 USD / month, so you can try hardware acceleration relatively inexpensively and cancel if it does not meet your needs.

The 980 has a GM204 chip and can decode H.264 8-bit video. H.265 video, including HDR, will still decode on the CPU. Also, Plex currently decodes VC-1 video in software (on the CPU), irrespective of GPU capabilities.
