Use phone to authenticate user?

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked before, I’ve just done quite a few searches and couldn’t find anything regarding this…so…

I imagine that most people who have Plex running on a TV device also have the plex app on their phone. Having just bought a appletv 4th gen, it’s quite clunky entering the pin on the screen.

It would be really rear if you could authenticate the login via he plex app on the phone, i.e. Disable the pin and only allow the a login to be approved by a user of a device. (Maybe Fingerprint where available)

Just a thought…

The purpose of using a PIN is to authenticate/register a device. You cannot authenticate one device using another device, that completely defeats the purpose of having a PIN in the first place.

So no, you cannot use your phone to authenticate/register your TV.

Not really, even at a basic level it could pop up “user Fred wants to log in to device lounge, enter pin”, you either know the pin or you don’t.

Entering pins on the tv is so clunky.

Heck even a separate Plex auth app would be useful and also discreet. Anybody watching you enter the pin on the tv will see the pin as you enter it, which, well kind of defeats the purpose of a pin…

I realise this is probably not so much of an issue on other platforms where a keyboard or a different pin entry method exists, it’s just that the pin entry on the appletv version just is next to useless unless you ask people to close their eyes!

Just to clarify… are you suggesting leveraging your iOS Plex App to allow authentication of members of a Plex Home on the aTV? Not sure that was clear in your first post.

If so, I completely agree with you and this one of the main reasons I’ve not used the aTV Plex as my primary and stuck with PMP. My son is often in the room with me while I’m using Plex and he would no doubt see my PIN as I highlighted the numbers using my remote.

While I agree this would be awesome and have personally recommended it to the developers, I don’t believe (total guess on my part here, no insider knowledge) we’ll see this come to fruition. Not sure enough users would use it for the amount of effort required to implement.

The best we can do is lend our vote to the thread in the Features/Voting section.

Yes, that’s exactly what I was suggesting. I searched but couldn’t find the other thread.

I know it took years and years before parental controls eventually made it in so I’m not holding my breath, but it does seem that everybody who uses Plex has the best method of authenticating a user sitting in their pocket! I would hazard a guess that although most people would be ambivalent to such a feature, you’d probably find that a lot of people would actually end up using it as it would be a massive convenience.

Plus you could have stronger passwords, Touch ID etc…

I voted on the thread you linked to!

Cheers dude.
