Use tags for films with multiple copies due to quality

Hiya,

Hope all is well. Quick question for the experts.

Let’s say i have a 1080p and a 4k version of a film. Plex knows I have both versions and depending on the client allows me to easily select the version that would be best for the client device.
I give my films sharing tags. How in this situation would i give the 4k version of the film a different tag to the 1080p version or would i need to split them up?

The reason i do this is to hide the 4k version of films from some users as i know their device will really struggle (native plex app on samsung TV)

you can’t without splitting the items first.
there’s a number of people starting separate 4K libraries for that particular purpose.

Perfect. Is it possible to tell plex not to merge them by default?

no, Plex will always attempt to identify the actual movie and merge identical items
