Subtitle issue on content with multiple versions

After spending hours trying to google an answer to my issue I am resorting to this.

My System: Synology DS920+ NAS running my PLEX Server and multiple LG smart TVs

Recently I have started downloading 4k content because of recent TV purchases that allow 4k content. My 4k content is in a separate library to the other content on my NAS. I also have a TV that will only support 1080p content. Rather than making the NAS transcode the 4k content when I’m using the 1080p TV I elected to maintain a 1080p version of the same movie so it can direct stream and that works perfectly in that PLEX selects the correct version and I’m off and running. Plex groups\merges these two movies together and shows the “2” in the corner of the movie poster indicating there are different version of the same movie. That’s fine.

The problem is that when I stream the 1080p version of the movie subtitles will not work. I can see the subtitles on the 4k version of the same movie and they work, but not on the 1080p version. Even if there is an external .srt file in the directory with the 1080p movie I can not select it. I am tearing my hair out over this. Is there any way to separate\de-merge the movies that have duplicate content so that I can get subtitles working? Am I missing something when it come to getting this working? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Click on the ellipsis next to the movie → Split.

Most users create a dedicated library for 4K content, this way they can avoid sharing/streaming/transcoding their content with Remote users.

Thanks for telling me how to split them. I took your recommendation and created a new library for my 4K Movies and disabled sharing for external users. seems to have solved the problem of grouping\merging the two versions as well.

opening up a fairly old thread but was this ever sorted? I understand people have a separate 4k folder but I prefer the idea of plex deciding on the file version based on the clients connection. that way I get 4k and my family gets 1080p. however when my family in Thailand try to load up subtitles they don’t have the option for the 1080p content. can I fix this (without a separate library)?

Subtitles cannot be shared across the different versions of a movie.
Each version needs its own subtitles. Either internal or external.
