Useless Plex Converting feature

Why does this annoying Plex always insist on “converting”? There needs to finally be an option to disable this unnecessary, pointless, and stupid conversion feature. It has never made sense and will never make sense in the future. It’s a feature that should simply be left out altogether. At the very least, there should be an option to completely turn it off. This has been frustrating me for years. In almost all cases, no conversion is needed—it can play directly. So why this nonsense?

Plex transcodes when the device in question either cannot direct stream, or the compatibility of the player cannot be determined.

There is a setting called Disable video stream transcoding however this will probably prevent some of your devices from playing your media as both the audio and video streams must be compatible with direct streaming on any particular device.

To add to @dbirch ,

Apps also have a “Force DirectPlay” option in their Settings.

Since the app is what controls whether or not playback is transcoded,
this setting allows you to force DirectPlay if you know DirectPlay will be successful.

If it can’t DirectPlay, it will fail when you try to play something which requires conversion (either Audio or Video or Container Format)

still useless this feature… Even 720p Movies are not playable, because it wants to transcode or convert… whats wrong with those people who develop this plex.

Just add that feature… Conversion or transcode makes No sense overall, never, in no case. NEVER.

@jensche

Go to your Player’s settings. Set to “Force DirectPlay”.

-or-

in Transcoder Settings

At this point it will either play or it won’t entirely dependent on how you prepared the media for that player.

not working.

“It’s broke” doesn’t tell me anything about how to help you.

Can you get me the server’s DEBUG logs ZIP file ( Settings - [server] - Troubleshooting - Download Logs) using the web app?
